iGo Juice tips for the Macbook?
 

I'm trying out the Macbook for the next 90 days to see if I can wean myself off my Thinkpad addiction. While I'm psyched to be getting a new toy, it looks like I'm SOL finding an iGo Juice tip so I can use my Empower adapter on long flights. The apple site doesn't have anything either. Does anybody know of any alternative to lugging 3-4 batteries with me everywhere I go?

I don't believe anyone has yet made a MagSafe adapter tip.

Looks like I might have to awaken my long dormant soldering skills and gin one up out of an iGo cable and a Macbook power adapter. At just under $100 for the parts, I'd have to say Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

Empower does not provide enough power to run or charge the Macbook Pro, the 13" Macbook appears to work though. Luckily it appears some airplanes are now being configured with 110v AC outlets instead of Empower or cigarette lighter style ports.

I'm tied to UA (which is tied to Empower). Also, my question is for the 13" Macbook.

Might this work?
 

Seeing as there still don't seem to be any magsafe type tips for the Igo Juice and with a fair bit of flying coming up, I'm trying to find a workaround.

Will this power a 13" Macbook off a BA F Empower socket? (assuming the thing doesn't shutdown randomly) ;)

This guy has hacked exactly what you're talking about. I'm sure if you google you'll find the solution. I'm doubting an EmPower/110v inverter will work. Too much loss in the conversion.

Apple sells a very small and light airplane power cord: the MagSafe Airline Adapter for $59.

It powers the Mac but does not recharge the battery. It also does not recharge iPods that are connected to the Mac. :(

iGo has changed their website to indicate that the magsafe adapter will NOT be available in Jan. Apple is not licensing the magsafe adapter.

When I saw this a couple of days ago, I was estatic. I'd love to get an iGo for my phone, iPod, MacBookPro, but it appears it is not to be. Now, I'll be dragging enough chargers to weigh 20 pounds on my next trip. Ugh.

Here's a solution for adapting a magsafe onto a 3rd party universal adapter. I bought myself a Kensington 120 watt AC/DC power supply on sale at Best Buy, a few parts from Radio Shack, and an hour's worth of my time with some wire strippers, heat shrink, and a soldering iron, and now I have all kinds of ways to power all my toys on the road or airplane with a single adapter. You do need to cut the wire to your MacBook's AC adapter, but you can still use it as a backup power supply. He also sells completed adapter kits as well.

If you're doing it yourself, his store has a downloadable pdf available for sale. I'd offer the service to any of you here that are squirmish as well, you supply the adapters, I have a local source for reasonably priced connectors. ;)
