Traveling with a projector

I will be traveling with a brand new projector for the first time, I have a nice softshell case for it which holds it comfortably all the accessories, I obviously will carry it on.

Do I have to remove it from the case same as a laptop for the TSA? Anyone have amy issues traveling with one of these?

Thanks.

Just do what they say; they say "laptops only" so don't even bother mentioning the projector. You need to keep them away from it since they have a history of breaking stuff. Other than that there are no issues, just makes sure you don't drop it :D

I have been travelling with one for years now. I do not remove it from the wheeled "catalogue" case I use for it. In that case, I also put a couple of external HDs, various wires I will need on the plane for powerpoint connections for iPod and computer, and my toilet kit.

About 50% of the time the screener will ask, "It this a projector?" About 70% of those times, they will open the outer case, swab everything in sight, and close the case without opening the soft zippered case for the projector itself. In other words, they never sight it.

So, since I have a bunch of stuff stuffed around it, and since extra handling means extra chances to fall, I never remove it.

It is getting long in the tooth and there are much smaller equally powerful projectors out there for way less money that I paid ... so I keep hoping it will get broken so my insurance will buy me a new one! ;)

I can only wonder if it is fear of breaking the thing that keeps them from handling it more. I also wonder why they swab its case so often.

I took a projector BOS-SJC-BOS a few weeks back. It was small enough to fit into my carry-on. Left it in both times. Not questioned or inspected on either.

Like a previous poster said, it ain't a computer. Nothing in the rules says projectors have to be removed. Screeners are trained to follow the rules, not to analyze the underlying logic(?) behind them and try to meet its spirit.

As other posters have said it is not necessary to remove the projector, but I do it anyway. The few minutes it takes to pull it out, the less time I have to deal with TSA. I just throw it in with the shoes and other loose gadgets, never have been questioned about it.
