iPod Question

I'm about ready to get the new 60 gig iPod. Quick question, though:

Can I organize my music either by folders or albums. I always listen to an album at a time and have to be able to select by album (or folder containing the album), rather than by song.

Thanks.

SpaceBass May 6, 2006 1:42 pm

yeah, you can list them by album, artist, genre...do play lists, etc

Arishap May 6, 2006 3:06 pm

you can download the user guides from www.apple.com

kanebear May 6, 2006 7:03 pm

You can organize songs as you wish into Playlists that you create. The iPod by default also lets you look at your library sorted by Album, Artist and Genre. You can also put songs in an On The Go playlist. For this reason, screwed up ID3 tags will drive you NUTS on an iPod.

PTravel May 7, 2006 6:42 am

Thanks. I've managed my ID3 tags pretty well, so I don't think it will be a problem. I've been looking on the Apple website for iPod, and it highlights what I've never liked about Apple computers and operating systems, i.e. "you don't have to know anything, we'll do it all." The focus of Apple's website is buying music from iTunes and playing them as individual songs. On-the-go playlists were mentioned, but album wasn't.

So, anyway, thanks again! I've found the new 60 gig model for $385, no tax, no shipping, from a very reliable on-line vendor. Best of all, I've got my wife's permission to buy it. ;)

The black 60GB is currently $350 at Amazon:

It's listed, now, for $379 and, at any rate, I've already ordered mine, but thanks. I got mine from B&H Photo Video which is, in my opinion, the most ethical and reliable on-line mail order dealer. I'm always willing to pay a couple of extra bucks for the security of knowing that I'll get exactly what I ordered and have the integrity of B&H to back it up.

Now, I have to buy all those accessories . . . let's see, I need a dock, and a case, and an extended life battery . . . ;)

If you need more battery life, this might do the trick.

30GB v. 60GB?

I'm looking to purchase my first mp3 player and I had a few questions. After looking over the iPod's at the MAC store, I'm trying to figure out if I really need the 60gb machine. I don't listen to much music (about 100 songs in my iTunes), and my main purpose for purchasing the mp3 player is for listening to my language CD's (about 1GB). The idea of downloading videos has caught my interest because I'll be out of the country for 2 months, outside of that the only other feature I want is the ability to record lectures. It looks like my school discount will get me the 60gb for $369 or the 30gb for $269 - are there better sources?

Any suggestions? Thanks, Ken.

nmenaker Jun 2, 2006 10:30 am

outpost

outpost has them for 355$ and till yesterday there was a 12% off coupon, making them 317$ for a refurb.
and there is an amazon electronics coupon that should bring it to under 350$
I would definitly go with the 60 GB regardless,

the amazon coupon may have expired on 5/31 though, but they come and go quickly.

I would personally, wait a week. I think this stock is being cleared out for new ipods to come in the next 3-6 weeks.

Is there a 6th generation about to be released?

I was in this same, exact position a few months ago. I finally gave up on the MuVo I had bought and decided that the extra money for an iPod was the way to go. I have a few more songs than you, but only one picture and no videos downloaded. Since I did not see much of an increase in my use of picture and video down the road, I went for the 30gb model. If you plan on doing more pictures and video, then you might want the extra 30gb. Only you can make that decision, really.

I bought mine at the Apple Store in Barton Creek Mall. They had a 10% off sale going on at the time and took off another percentage for a student discount, so I ended up paying $229 plus tax, title, and license. This price break encouraged me to buy the extended service warranty, which I think is around $89, so the whole package came to around $365 and I am incredibly happy with it.

my GUESS is yes,

it has been well over 200 days since the last ipods were released and the normal time between updates is 145 days.

I am waiting to get one and certainly not buying one of the current models today.

If one wants a current model, I would at least wait a week and see what better deals are coming.

If you seriously have the intention of storing movies then the 60gb may be worth while. However if you are going to load one or two at a time and then remove them, the 30 will do fine. Another reason to consider the 60gb is for audio quality. I rip my CDs using Apple Lossless format which results in about 90mb / song. If you have a nice pair of earphones (Shures or Grado for example) then you'll appericate the quality.

That being said, if you are listeing to mostly stuff bought from iTunes and recorded lectures (which you can compress the heck out of)...and listening using ear buds or something, then the 30gb should be fine.

The 60gig offers a couple of advantages. First, it will run longer on the battery (Apple say up to 20+ hours) than the 30 gig. Second, the iPod is a versatile data storage device. You can keep your Outlook contacts and calendar on it, and use it as a USB drive on your computer. Finally, I do keep movies on it, in case I get board in-flight. Each movie takes up about 2/3rds of a gigabyte. Given all of that, I thought it made sense to get the largest capacity iPod possible.

I bought the 60gig from B&H for around $380, no tax and shipping of about $6.

Thanks, what does "B&H" stand for? Also, are there any dangers in purchasing a previously owned iPod. I've found one in almost perfect condition for $300 (I think he'll take $250). It's a 4 month old 60GB version with a power adapter.

B&H is in New York so you can just walk in. Great place, they are one of the most respected camera/electronics stores in the country. Their store is at 420 9th Ave. One of the best in the business IMO.

As for the used Ipod, is it the Video? If not, I wouldn't get it. You never realize how nice it is to be able to watch on the go until you try it.

I did a search on "6th Generation iPod" and it appears that there is one coming soon. I think that I'll wait a little and buy the new version. Nothing would tick me off more than purchasing an item, and find out that an updated version is available a few days later. I think I may pick up an inexpensive shuffle or nano for my language lessons (immediate need), and give it to my wife (who would listen to music at gym) when the new 6th generation comes available.

There is ALWAYS a new iPod on the way. The best way to prevent disappointment is to simply buy every single new one. It is what Stevo wants you to do :D

essxjay Jun 3, 2006 11:06 am

Well, I have absoutely nothing to add cuz as it turns out this newz about the 6th gen model is what I was hoping for.

I'm in the same position as TMK, in terms of not if but when to pull the trigger on a new iPod. And I'm going for the 60GB model. The extra battery life alone is worth it to me. What I want to know is how I've managed to limp along with 4GB for this past year. Seems laughably toylike now.

OT to Ken: 100 songs?! WTH? :p Anyway, other than the standard student discount, B&H is about the best in the biz -- and if you can just hop the subway downtown so much the better. I used to buy ALL my photo equipment from them back in the good old film days. Even w/shipping ya couldn't beat them for prices and business ethics.

OT to the thread: iTunes? God, if I stuck to ITMS as my sole source of music I'd be in much more student loan debt that I have any right to be ... another shameless pitch for allofmp3.ru ... :ducking:

ScottC Jun 3, 2006 11:49 am

Before you all delay getting a new iPod; there IS NO NEWS about a "6th generation" ipod. The stuff online is all based on rumors and speculation. The only time you'll know whether there really will be 6th gen ipod is the day Apple announces it.

kukukajoo Jun 3, 2006 12:21 pm

Got my daughter the 60 gig for Christmas using my student discount and got it engraved for free which she thinks is "the cake"

I send her on missions looking for free Itunes and she downloads desperate Housewives so I can watch it on my pc as I dont have cable!

60gb, 5th Gen, iPod Video with AC adapter, four months old, great condition - $250 (new price) - Is this a good buy?

Indeed. The rumours about the "true" video iPod have been circulating for months.

Wow! That's a great price, as long as it hasn't been thrashed. Can you get it with a guarantee?

The main thing I'd watch out for is the battery. These can't be changed by a user (in theory -- there are kits available to do it), and Apple charges something like $70 to repair it. That's not bad, considering their original position was, "We won't repair -- buy a new iPod." The lithium ion batteries have a limited number of charge cycles -- 300 to 500 as I recall.

The other concern would be serious damage to the hard disk. I don't know anyone to check that, except to install 60 gig worth of data (actually not that hard -- the iPod works as a USB drive) and make sure it doesn't throw any errors. Also, hard drive problems could be heat related -- just play music for 24 hours and make sure it does okay.

nmenaker Jun 3, 2006 2:25 pm

applecare

for the 250$ ipod, for 55$ you always add apples great applecare plan, which would cover it for another two years. battery is included in this.

call them up, send it in an another one gets shipped out the same day.

Another good use for a high-capacity iPod is temporary storage of digital photos. You can empty your card onto the iPod and keep on shooting without having to start up the computer. There are various adapters available to facilitate this.

Great tip! ^ I've become a bit of a photo-junkie over the past 2 years, and it's not unusual for me to burn through 500mb on my camera. It's not always convenient to open up my laptop and do a transfer - so it looks like I'll be a 60gb iPod man :)

P.S.: I just gained permission from my wife for a b-day iPod - it's only the 3rd b-day request I've made in 10 years, so she gave me the green light

Thanks for the Help!

After looking at a few previously owned, I decided to simply buy a brand new iPod. I picked up a black 60gb video for $340 including tax from a wholesale dealer down in Chinatown. I also bought a new, unlocked GSM cell phone to use in China for the next few months.

I'm still in shock - a Mac notebook for my wife and an iPod all in the last 2 weeks; I'm slowly warming up to the "Dark" side..... I'm starting to like mac stuff  :D

GadgetFreak Jun 5, 2006 4:07 am

I have a 60 gb and love it. I do have one complaint though and that is that the video KILLS the battery life. I was on a 7 hour flight yesterday and was fully charged at take off and adding about 30 minutes of video to my music playing almost didnt leave me enough charge for the flight. Made it but the battery indicator was on red. I think I need a Nano for, um backup ;)

I've been flying with a shuffle for over a year now. I mostly listen to podcasts but over half the 1GB is devoted to music. I've tried language lessons and they sound fine though I personally prefer a book where I can see the pronunciation. My wife's car radio tape deck died about 6 months ago. I bought her a 512MB iPod and the AirPlay transmitter and she's quite happy with it.
