I have had my cable modem since 2001, never had a problem, and BTW, it came with a 5-year warrenty. |

make certain you get a supported modem. I have a Motorola SBV 5120. comcast supports the SB 5120. they do NOT support the SBV 5120.

bumping old thread.
I am pretty satisfied with the speed of RCN. So I would like to stop paying the 3 dollars a month for a rental. Some questions. Will I get any performance bump at all using my own modem? Are there DOCSIS 3.0 modems out there / any point in getting one / is 2.0 going to be ok for the next x years so I go way past the 18 month break even point? Any suggestions on lists of modems between Comcast and RCN. I am thinking of getting a modem that is compatible with both so I can switch between the two providers. |

I would wait until they are available in Best Buy and online. When I purchased my Motorola modem about 5 years ago, Best Buy was offering an $80 rebate. The modem cost $99. So basically I got the modem for $20 (plus tax). Not a bad deal. It's lasted me 5 years. |
You can't take advantage of DOCSIS 3.0 modem capabilities unless the cable operator has 3.0-capable equipment at their end.
