travelling with a portable printer
I've long been wanting a portable photo printer to take on trips, and after some recent research, I'm leaning towards buying an Epson Picturemate Deluxe.
I expect it'll have to travel in my checked suitcase, being too big for my carry-on bag. My question is, isn't there a considerable risk of the ink leaking out of the cartridges as the checked suitcase is tossed around with who knows which end up? Or are portable printer cartridges designed to prevent this? If not, what do I need to do to avoid ink spillage problems -- take the ink cartridges out and carry them in my carry-on? |

I would suggest to revise your thread title if your question is more about ink spillage than portability. Portability was addressed in the earlier and still active thread. I don't carry a printer on the road. At least not yet. So I don't have 1st-hand info to share. However, I would really like to learn from our seasoned FTers who travell with printers as to how they take care the ink spillage problem, if that's ever an issue, just for future reference. |
I have an old portable HP printer. When I take it while flying, it goes in my carryon bag with the laptop, in a padded case to protect it. I've never worried about ink spill. But I'd never put one in a checked bag for fear of it breaking. (Would you put your laptop in checked baggage?) If you do, take the ink cartridge out and take it in your carryon. Mine came with a special case to put it in to prevent spills.
