Microsoft Briefcase Tool
 

When I go on the road I take a lot of files(just in case). For the last 6 months I have been using Microsoft Briefcase to keep my documents / files synchronized and have found it to be a great tool.

Just recently I have been using it to synchronize my outlook.pst files - just in case of a HD meltdown and again it has been working well.

Just wondering what other people do and if others think this is a safe proceedure - and oh yeah I still back up my laptop on a regular basis.

I run all my mail through Gmail and use that as an archive, saves making backups and I can use the Google search on it if I think I lost something.

I use Gmail as well for that :) but just for incoming mail, I guess I could always BCC myself to get all email.

My "exposure" or perceived exposure it with all the word documents that I have to carry.

I use the Mirra file server (www.mirra.com). Whenever I'm connected to my home network the Mirra client backs up those folders I have flagged for automatic backup. It's not the lowest cost backup solution, but it sure is convenient.

I used Briefcase for years, but then ran into problems with one or two of them. Plus, with multiple backups and mirrors (and mirrors of mirrors), it got confusing. I switched a simple synchronizing tool (I use Synchronize It!, but SyncBack is supposed to be good).

For backing up Outlook files (and settings, which is always critical for - i.e., filters, etc.), I use Outback Plus 5. Google it to find the main page. It also backs up Firefox and IE settings, profiles, bookmarks, etc.

Having said that, I archive my email by year in separate .pst files, which get backed up multiple times and off site.

It does work pretty well for a toy though

I use PC Anywhere for my folder syncing. It's great for those times when you forget a file and need to pull something from your computer/server at home too.

I never liked the way Outlook backed up the Email. I always seemed to end up with a corrupt PST so now I use Gmail for everything.

Briefcase is a useful tool but requires a degree of discipline to use effectively. On my company laptop, there is currently a folder on my desktop called "old briefcases" because at one time I wasn't disciplined about it and I'm not sure what needs updating and what needs throwing away! I've bought some work home on a briefcase this weekend but I'll be deleting it as soon as I've verified synchronisation at the office on Monday morning.

I use Folder Share (www.foldershare.com) to sync my files between my office, laptop, home office, travel office and my cousin's office.

When I change one file, it is updated on all of the computers. So when I want to look at a large file (such as a plat), it is right there on my hard drive. I can make a brochure and call my cousin, and they can open it off their hard drive (my folder) and print it out. It's really a great program.

After I bought and paid for this service, Microsoft bought the company and gave me my money back. They offer it for free, although the quality might not be as good as what I get as a former "premium" customer.
