Does anyone sell a simple hard disk based digital video recorder without a monthly subscription fee?
I don't really need Tivo or other sophisticated scheduling programs, I just want to be able to record the occassional TV show. Basically what I want is a digital version of a standard re-recordable VCR. I don't want to use up DVD media. |

HDD (hard disk drive) Digital Video Recorder. Answer: Yes, several.
Try Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, Toshiba. Some have DVD recorders to transfer favorite shows from hard drive to DVD, some have program guides or use VCR+ codes. I own a Panasonic DMR-E85H. Word of caution: Some have issues with digital cable boxes or satellite, so do research. |
This might be a little much but Myth TV has come a long way...

Hi,
I have a Toshiba RD XS34 which uses TV Guide as the program guide at no fee. It has a 160Gbyte Hard Drive and DVD-R,DVD-RW or DVD-RAM format burner. I am very satisfied with it. It has an IR Blaster that can control a cable box including Digital Cable boxes like a Motorola DCT2000 but does not work with Dish or DirectTV. I am very satisfied with it. It does enforce Digital rights management which prevents you from burning certain programs from the Hard Disk to DVD the obvious way. It is still doable. |

A group of us got a buddy a Pioneer one for a wedding present last September. He's been VERY happy with it. You're on the right track - Make sure it has a hard disk. Here's what we got him: http://tinyurl.com/asael Cheers, Geoff Glave Vancouver, Canada |
Are there any that do high-definition?
