Does Sirius work Internationally?

Title pretty much sums it up. Going to Italy in Jan, wondering if Sirius would work over there. Tried searching on FT, nothing found. Tried looking at Sirius.com but it wouldn't load properly.

ScottC Dec 28, 2005 8:36 pm

Nope. Siruis "birds" only cover the US.

Interesting question, since Sirius satellites are on an inclined elliptical orbit, not geostationary as one would expect, and thus overfly other parts of the globe.

However, as pointed out, they do not broadcast when not over the CONUS. More details here

Ok, then, how about XM? Any chance it works internationally?

SomeGuy Dec 28, 2005 8:54 pm

Looking at that website, looks like Internationally yes, if NAFTA is international. Well, guess I'm hauling a bunch of CDs with me.

None at all, XM has two geostationary satellites covering North America only, with a somewhat smaller footprint than Sirius.

Your only option is to stream Sirius over your laptop and broadband.

There are other more complicated ways involving a 3G phone, a PDA and some software that would allow you to stream Sirius when you are roaming the streets of Italy, but that is getting way too complicated.

... and expensive! I would hate to see those data roaming charges...

Or at least rip 'em all to the laptop using iTunes and save the space! That doesn't cost anything.

XM also offers free internet streaming. So if you have a WiFi connection you can llisten to XM anywhere. There is also a XM pocket PC program if you have a wireless enabled pocket PC device.

I know XM is expanding (just launched a Canada based subscription). I thought I remember reading that XM and a "World Radio" signed a deal to allow use all over the world, but I do not remember the specifics. Sorry.

Sirius has the World Radio Network channel, basically international news programing from various international outlets.

Due to satellite orbits, XM and Sirius are only available in North America (except online).

Other than buying a new computer, any suggestions to get this to work?

Go into the control panel, then into Internet Settings/Options, then select the Connections tab and tell it to "Never Dial A Connection".

Oh Shoot! I posted that here instead of a new post. Gotta wake up

I've no idea about Sirius, but WorldSpace is a satellite radio broadcaster whose coverage extends to Italy (though its primary focus is developing countries in Africa and Asia): http://www.worldspace.com/.

Wrong. Sirius (not XM) covers nearly all of North and Central America. I have listened to Sirius from my cruise ship balcony in Aruba (just off shore from Venezuela), Grenada, Dominica and the Panama Canal.

Sirius and XM are the same. Sirius bought XM in 2008.

They are the same company, but they use different satellites for the two services, and thus have different coverage areas.

There is a difference, a big difference between Sirius and XM

Sirius compared to XM has different satellite footprints (Sirius is broader and I think better) and different signal encoding techniques (Sirius is better) and a number of different virtual channels.
