REALLY cool flight tracking website...

Check out their live status per airport:

Be sure to click on the map for local flight maps, and see every incoming and outgoing flight at your local airport!

Very, very, very cool! Best thing I've seen in a long time.

If you're tracking a specific long flight, using ScottC's link in one window and Google ---> www.fboweb.com (which uses Google maps for its tracking) would be the best of everything!

Edited to add: I have my airport's window open and the flight on the screen just went overhead six minutes ago)

From the site's faq: "The data displayed on FlightAware is typically six minutes delayed from real time."

Sweet site! Thanks for sharing! :D

It's the best thing since sliced bread!

FewMiles Nov 7, 2005 10:30 pm

Neat site. I could waste hours of time on this! :)

FewMiles..

civicmon Nov 7, 2005 10:45 pm

This is pretty cool! Can see how like FedEx and UPS work at MEM and PHL, respectively.

ALL the flights landing now at MEM are FedEx and they're landing pretty close together timewise.

Xyzzy Nov 8, 2005 12:25 am

This is WAY cool! Now I can tell what's just flown overhead!

andre1970 Nov 8, 2005 1:32 am

Really neat!

jsmeeker Nov 8, 2005 12:08 pm

Very nice. You can also track planes flying in and out of airports that don't have commerical flights. (I assume it's only guys operating IFR )

TakeMeToEZE Nov 8, 2005 7:24 pm

Thanks for the link. I wasted quite a bit of time playing with the site. :)

LAX-1K Nov 8, 2005 8:58 pm

Scott, like the others have said above: thanks for the great link ^ ^

Now I can waste more time than with FT alone :D

I'll set this up for Mrs. LAX-1K to check on my next flight later this week.

izzik Nov 8, 2005 10:27 pm

way kewl.

Fraser Nov 9, 2005 1:25 pm

Nice ^

CApreppie Nov 9, 2005 1:31 pm

Great--thanks! I like the airport option and the 7-day history of a flight.

Very useful. The best flight tracker I've seen now.

MDtR-Chicago Nov 9, 2005 2:07 pm

WHOA! This is actually really cool... ^

indufan Nov 9, 2005 3:17 pm

I checked this out late last night and decided that FedEx should be my preferred carrier out of IND.

DCAKen Nov 10, 2005 6:15 am

This site is a great resource...and a great time-waster. Now to exercise self-control at work so I'm not watching it all day...

iCorpRoadie Nov 10, 2005 7:33 am

Now we just need wireless on the plane for when they remove the map for the damn IFM.

zxcvbs Nov 10, 2005 1:26 pm

wow, nice ^

back seat Nov 10, 2005 2:17 pm

Does this website have the ability to track the flight in a real time manner - without having to keep entering the airline and flight number in? If so I can't seem to find it.

clover Nov 10, 2005 2:17 pm

Well, there went that hour! Very cool site. Looks like it's still in Beta stage. i may need a 12 step program to get over this thing. ;)

nfc Nov 12, 2005 10:08 pm

Thanks for the link. It's amazing how there are always new ways to waste countless hours :)

The map of the flight should open in a separate window. It should keep refreshing with position changes, but if it doesn't just hit Ctrl-R.

(Keeping in mind that, per the site FAQ, there is a 6 minute delay on the data)

Kibison Nov 12, 2005 11:46 pm

Very cool for the US but it doesn't work on the rest of the world. :(

I got it now!

If you click on the map it then opens in another window and it works :D

Now I wonder if it is the actual track of the flight OR just the projected track. I will have to ask a friend to find out.

I'm pretty sure the tracks (live and historical) are real, and not projections. After a recent flight from DFW-EWR, I went to the website to see the historical track, and sure enough, it had a big loop in it where we circled over Virginia for 20 minutes in a holding pattern. Very cool!

fly-yul Nov 14, 2005 12:27 pm

Great site!
Thanks.

And it is the only free site that I have found that allows you to track private aircraft using call letters.

Wx4caster Dec 14, 2005 6:08 pm

It gives actual positions - clicking the 'en route' link next to status, you get minute by minute lat/lons and altitudes.

Doppy Dec 14, 2005 7:30 pm

Cool ^^^

theblakefish Dec 15, 2005 10:44 am

Thanks, yet another thing to play with instead of working...

us2 Dec 15, 2005 1:03 pm

I'm glad people are finding this site interesting. I actually posted about it before, but the thread never took off for some reason. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...lightaware.com

It is a terrific time waster...

One other point: if you do a search for airport traffic, the site gives you the current and forecast weather for that station, albeit encoded in METAR or TAF format. Very helpful if you're checking possibly iffy destination weather.

Caloy Dec 15, 2005 3:28 pm

It's not one of the best tracking sites I've seen - it's THE best tracking site!! It's hard to put it aside and do something else...

PhlyingRPh Dec 15, 2005 3:41 pm

This flightaware is just too cool! I'll be back in about three years. :D

GUWonder Dec 15, 2005 3:45 pm

This is excellent. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. :)

chexfan Dec 15, 2005 5:34 pm

Oh wow. OH... WOW! :D

YYZC2 Dec 15, 2005 9:42 pm

Does anyone else stop and watch the live 3D map of the Bay Area they have at SFO? I think it is there to map approach routes in accordance with noise abatement laws, but I find it very interesting. I especially like how the different airlines' liveries are applied to the 3D aircraft models according to their callsign. I'd love to be able to recreate that on my PC.

Kiwi Flyer Dec 15, 2005 10:22 pm

Excellent site ^

How do you see that?? I can't find it.
