ReplayTV's for $0

If you are in the market for a DVR, ReplayTV has a rebate and coupon program going through 30 September (4 days remain) that will get you a 5504 with 40 hours of record time for free before $12 shipping. This is for a refurbished unit and you must activate with one time fee ($299) or monthly activation of $12.95. I have several refurbished ReplayTV's and have had no problems with them.

Can you use this product without the program guide, by using manually scheduled recordings on a line-in jack? I am perfectly willing to plug my DirecTV receiver into Line-1 AV in, and manually schedule recordings on the ReplayTV. My DirecTV box can be commanded to change channels on schedule from its' own program guide, all I need to do is have the Replay box record line in at the appointed times.

I also contemplate using this device for security recording, by hooking a composite video camera to one of the line ins and essentially let it record around the clock. My very old PVS2000 ReplayTV box allowed me to simply sit with the Replay parked on Line in, and the buffer would continually be running. If at anytime I wanted to see previous content, I would simply rewind to earlier in the buffer and playback to VCR for recording if necessary. No timers to set. Wonder if this promo refurb unit can do the same thing.

It looks like receiving the rebate requires activation (and service plan payment), but still even if I don't activate it, $83++ for a 40 hour Replay box isn't bad. Assuming that's what the "real" cost would be to get it into my hands, without any service plan purchase.

Thanks.
Jim

The units are essentially a door stops if you don't purchase activation which includes the program guide.

You could do all the things you are talking about but only after activation either by the one-time fee or monthly. No one has yet figured out how to use the units without activation.

Looks like they're all out of stock on the free ReplayTVs.

There back with the "Fall Savings Rebate". A 40 hour refurbished is $0 and the 80 hour refurbished is $19 after rebate.

The end of ReplayTV as we know it:

No more DVR boxes, Replay going "PC only"...

Very interesting news. Short on details and the big question I suppose is if it will be 100% Windows based or emulated through mapusoft or something.

Just went to look into buying another Replay unit and all they seem to have left are 5516 units at $99 after rebate. I should have bought one at $0 during the last sale. :(

Too bad -- we have 2 old Replay TV's (in addition to our 2 TIVOs and 2 Comcast HDTV DVRs, and a DVD Recorder with hard drive!). -- they are reliable, and actually have a few advantages over the TIVO. They are certainly more stable than the Comcast boxes.

My wife's philosophy is to record everything and sort it out later.

It looks like Replay has sold all of their stock of ReplayTV hardware, at least what was being offered on their web site. Funny how word of a products demise makes them move more product.

I don't know who would pay for that crappy service. I use a Panasonic DVD Recorder that I bought using BestBuy Reward certificates (it was pretty funny handing the clerk 65 $10 certificates to scan). Plug in cable, the listings pop up in about 15 minutes, and you get a 160GB hard drive AND DVD recorder.

Beat that, TiVo and ReplayTV!
