Google VPN would be a better name for it at the moment, as there does not appear to be any hotspots yet.

This seems to be similar to the software that T-Mobile supplies Hot Spot subscribers with a secure connect to their network.

Further evidence of Google's grand plan to reduce Windows to a badly debugged driver layer?

yes,

yes, this will be an ipsec or other VPN type software, very similar to the jiwire conect agent (which I can recommend) but which carries a 4.95$ a month fee. Nice to have though, creating a secure wireless connection, regardless of hotspot used open or for pay.

A friend said he had noted a hotspot in SFO a couple weeks ago, that had GOOGLE WIFI as the SSID, but that could have really been anybody. Somewhere downtown I think.

They sponsor a Feeva hotspot in Union Square.

Just saw an article about this on ZDNet ( http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1035_22-5...ml?tag=nl.e589 ) . Looks very interesting, can't wait to see Google give t-Mobile a run for the money. There are apparently already 2 locations in Mountain View.
