Firefox users...

I am regularly being notified that updates are available via a green puzzle piece thing in the bottom right corner that pops up as well as a green circle with white arrow in the top right corner that is always there.

Whenever I try to get updates by clicking on one of these I get a pop up box that procedes to check for updates. The status bar gets 2/3 of the way to the right but never goes any further. I have let it run for 20+ minutes before.

What gives?

Could be that you have it set not to allow websites to download software. Go to Tools -> Options -> Web Features, then tick the box that allows it to happen.

Thanks for the response. All five boxes to the left are checked and the one box to the right is not checked. It has been that way for as long as I can remember.

:(

I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't think that is it.

This happened to me on at least two different computers pre 1.0.6 release. What I did was manually download the update from the firefox website and install manually. That seemed to have solved my problem as other updates via have worked fine after that.

I'm not sure exactly what was going on, but I think an extension was causing the problem.

As a relatively new user (2-3 months), I am already running version 1.0.6. I am am not sure what the updates are, and I did not see much when I went to the website. I would gladly download any updates if I knew where to look. I am using the most recent version, but I am unsure what I am being prompted to install???

1.06 is the latest. The update doesn't work right for me either. Just go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ and download the new version. Then uninstall Firefox from windows but don't delete anything else like the folders or anything. When finished, install the program you just downloaded. It will install the new program and keep all your settings. Do at your own risk but it hasn't ever caused a problem for me or anyone I know.

Thanks!

Will this process affect extensions? (No - I answered my own question)

Also, while I am uninstalling, can I ditch IE? Or is Windows XP dependant on it somehow? In other words, when I go to My Documents it is in an IE browser format??? Sorry, but my terminologies are probably wrong.

That didn't work either. I downloaded, uninstalled and installed what I had downloaded. Everything was back to normal (extensions, favorites, etc). The only problem is that the green circle with arrow was still at the top right. When I scroll across I am notified "Update(s) Available" but when I click it begins "Checking for Updates" and stalls.

It's almost certainly a problem with an extension. Which ones do you have installed? I think if you go to the extensions manager there's an update button. If I recall correctly, it shows you which extension it is currently checking for updates, and you should be able to see which one is hanging.

The firefox updater leaves much to be desired. They're supposed to be fixing it in 1.1.

Are you runnig Zone Alarm or other firewall?

You should click "Ok" when it asks to delete the folders. Nothing will be lost.

Define Word 0.5.1 - no update available
Resizeable Textarea 0.1a - no update available
Google Send to Phone 0.3 - no response
Super DragAndGo 0.2.4d1 - no update available

I manually checked by selecting each one and clicking update.

Is the Google extension the problem? It is still "Checking for Updates"

What do I do?

I am running Windows XP, so if I go to Start>Control Panel>Windows Firewall "On" is selected.

I also have CA (Computer Associates) eTrust exAntivirus running, but I don't think that is a firewall just antivirus software???

I just finished downloading 1.0.6 with XP Pro and Zone Alarm. I had no problems, and did not need to uninstall previous Firefox version. Only notice was that it was unable to load bandwidth check.
