Verizon FIOS good stuff

I don't know all the technical aspects of FIOS and whatever. All I know is that it works. I've had it for a few months and here is what I think.

(1) I'm paying $30 for the 12 mo -- $40 after that -- for 5MB speed. Much better than the DSL that I had.
(2) My phone line goes through the fiber optic. The sound quality of the calls are noticably better.
(3) Customer Service: My verizon customer service is much better than cable. Cablevision and Adelphia suck! Maybe your cable providers outside of NY and LA are better, but my experience with them is awful.
(4) There was prior comments that the techs were incompenent. However, the one who came to
(5) Hopefully they'll be offering Cable soon. So I can get that dish of my roof.
(6) This reason is by far the most rewarding... I get to screw over Cablevision with my wallet. I didn't like them to begin with because of their rates and customer service. However, their management reached new lows. These money hungry rat *******s totally destroyed any chance of NYC getting the 2012 Olympics. Quite frankly I don't know why any New Yorker uses them as a provider. The patriarch and especially that worthless son of his should be caned.

So in conclusion, I don't know the technical aspects [blah, blah, blah] of FIOS. However as a customer, I can honestly say the service is great and I haven't one problem. ^

FYI: Optimum online offers 10/1 quality service for about 44.95. They also offer more HD Content than DISH ever wish they could.

Cablevision didn't ruin the chance for the NYC 2012 bid, we had no chance - that was no big secret.

Hey Vince do you think they ever helped the NYC bid?
I never said dish was great, but they're not cablevision.
Do you work for them or what?

On Comcast you can operate a service when you have a business class level of service.

I know two people running servers on FIOS outside Philly. Dont know if legal but its currently going on and their FIOS service reported as excellent and consistant, and speeds very close to touted 15000 ul, 2000 dl for $50/mo.

I thought that you needed a static IP address in order to run a server. And I understand that you need business fios in order to get a static IP.

Second-hand information from Comcast has stated the AUPs for residential and commercial cable connections is THE SAME - both do not allow any type of services offered from the customer location.

I can't find the AUP on Verizon's website, unless they have it behind user/password-protected areas.

Not true. You host services from dynamic IP's as well, but it makes it harder to do. Dynamic DNS simplifies this.

Fiber Deployment Center seems to have a lot of information on fios.

You can run a server on a dynamic IP , its just going to be obnoxious when your IP lease finally expires...

from the verizon faq

https://www22.verizon.com/fiosforhom...sp#features_q1

1. Can I host a Web page?
Verizon Fios Internet Service consumer packages include 10 MB of personal Web space. The consumer offers do not permit customers to host any type of server, personal or commercial.

I suppose the 'legal' server TOS are now in the Verizon FIOS for Business packages, including static IP addresses.

Comcast business connections specifically state that you ARE ALLOWED to run a server on them, if you have a static IP. Most ISP's actually allow this on their business lines. I know of a web hosting firm that runs off a DSL line...

If I can put in my .02cents here and rant a bit—or a lot—in the process

My area was a testbed for Cable Modem access in NY. Reason was that the Dolan family (owners of Cablevision and the now defunct VOOM) wanted the high speed access at their doorstep (i.e. the "senior" Dolan’s homes) first no matter what the cost. We were thrilled. This was '97 mind you and I was running DirecPC at the time (when it was a satellite/dialup combo---what a waste of money!) The speed of Optimum was often in excess of 1mbps and it was a good deal since we kept basic cable in case we lost DirecTV service in a storm.

Flash forward to 2005... Cable modem speeds (even at the Dolan’s home) has been diminished enormously. Everyone complains about outages which are regular and can occur without any reason. Call their office in long Island and you often hear "welcome to Optimum online, we are currently experiencing outages in Mill Neck, Locust Valley, Cove Neck, Center Island, Brookville, and every other town on the North Shore" the list continues for about 5 minutes before you can select an option. And now the Dolan’s are afraid... VOOM was the biggest bust in the history of satellite (22 thousand customers in 2 years ). Verizon (for once appearing as the hero) has wired almost the entire North Shore of Long Island for FIOS—starting with the Dolan's home!!! (such a Branson-like move has to be applauded) Obviously the massive (and reliable) speeds at smaller prices scare them and they are trying to strong arm local governments into halting the placement of fiber ALONG with FIOS TV for users of FIOS's current service. I have the number for a senior tech at FIOS NY engineers say that:
A.) My local government has halted the placement of fiber underground (funny, they welcomed Cablevision with open arms)
and
B.) Their hands are tied. Apparently even though all of my neighbors are also screaming "we want FIOS" our town will not allow Verizon to place a cable underground in our own neighborhood association (Due to Cablevision's lovely tactics). An absurd action as we own our roads and all maintain our neighborhood separately from the town. And there is NOTHING we can do.

So now I am resorting to calling Optimum Online 5 times per day to get someone to my home to fix my cable modem which cuts out more times per day than I can record. Neighbors are getting lawyers involved and it’s a total mess!

FIOS includes:
6 hour battery backup (with the option of an additional battery)
The Ability for up to 12 phone lines
TV service (soon)
Veeeery quick speeds
No cable company attitude
Someone picking up the phone at the New York office within 30 seconds
And they install for free

Cablevision includes:
An option for their “state of the art” Optimum Voice service (which depends on a cable modem) as such ALL alarm companies wont let you use it with a new installation—you need a radio transmitter
ONE Phone Line (no capability for 2)
The crappiest cable TV service which I wouldn’t watch if you paid me (DirecTV is better, cheaper and pleasant to deal with)
Below 100kbps speeds at outrageous prices and no alternative
Cable company attitude
A welcome message and list of where their products do NOT currently function when you call (followed by a 30 min hold time and sometimes being transferred to India!)
The lousiest and most unprofessional repair people I have ever met (on a visit with a "senior / Level 2" technician they Drilled a HOLE in my house threw a cable into my second floor office and said "oh yeah it’ll work"

The day FIOS arrives at my home (I have it at work) is the day I put my cable modem in the microwave.

But other than that I love Cablevision and its outdated first generation network and its ability to strong arm NYC into loosing the Olympic bid!

edcli Aug 22, 2005 10:56 am

Oh yeah I forgot about VOIP with a house alarm. My friend's house alarm is tied to their OOL. A few months ago their alarm went off in the middle of the night b/c the cable modem went out -- nice.

Hey Vince I forgot I can get 12 worthless Zoom HD channels for my Dish courtesy of the Cablevision clan. I guess Dish's HD content isn't so bad after all or is it?
