Help Downloading WMP to a Mac

I don't know why but it just won't work....I'm running Tiger and trying to put Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X on my system -- reluctantly I must add though :p

After I download the file it shows up as "Windows Media.sitx" and when I double click that, Tiger asks me to pick a program to open it with -- I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Thanks.

As an aside -- WMP won't hurt my mac will it? THanks.

You want to use stuffit to unarchive the compressed installer.

It's unlikely that WMP will hurt anything.

Correct. Your Mac came pre-hurt from the factory. ;)

I've downloaded and installed Windows Media Play on several Macs with Tiger. They just automatically installed for me. I don't recall ever having to unstuff anything manually. Don't know why your download and install is different.

That's what's boggling me about it...

I can't find stuff it on the open/choose program window.....you can tell it's been a long time since i've used a Mac :-/

You ought to find Stuffit in your Applications folder and/or Stuffit Expander in its Utilities subfolder. Either should do the job.

If you can't get the Open dialogue to pick one of them, try one of these:

1. Select the file, choose Get Info from the File menu (or Command-I), and use Open With (a bit more than halfway down) to pick one of them.

2. Drag the file onto either program's icon.

3. Launch either one of them, then drag the file onto that program's icon in the dock or select it from that program's Open dialogue box.

That said, I agree with PremEx - I don't know why it doesn't just open.

That didn't work either. I have no idea why it doesn't just open either -- my last Mac (iBook) automatically downloaded WMP. I'm trying to download it from the Microsoft site so I don't see how that could be a problem. I'm just totally confused and it's erking me because I need to have this downloaded and running by tomorrow night.

Edit: I just tried yet again and the same thing. Windowsmedia.sitx downloaded to the desktop and then when I double click it: "There is no default application specified to open the document windowsmedia.sitx" I don't get it......

Tiger does not come with StuffIt any longer. Panther had it pre-installed but Apple dropped it when Tiger was released.

You can download it from StuffIt homepage (I think this link will take you to correct page right away: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/).

In that case, I stand corrected, since I haven't upgraded yet. I assumed it still did and based my reply on how my Panther system works. Sorry, and thank you!

I found WMP to be quite buggy on Tiger. If you just want to play WMV files, you might want to spend $10 on the flip4mac WMV player. It'll play wmv files through the QT player. It's pretty slick.

A free option would be VLC, but I've found it to be as buggy and resource hogging as WMP.

Well, if you have StuffIt installed (as you would if you are running Panther) and you perform Upgrade, then I think that StuffIt will still be around after Upgrade (it doesn't come from Tiger, it just survives as Upgrade does not touch it). I am not sure about Archive&Install (can't remember). Clean Install however does not have it any longer.

I just hope we are going to see less and less those compressed files requiring StuffIt.

Just wanted to say thanks for the help -- downloaded stuffit and everything worked fine from there. Thanks!
