Cingular Edge Card Does Not Work

I bought the Edge Network card (Sony Ericsson) for my laptop from Cingular for use internationally (where I have fine GPRS service on my Blakcberry from Cingular.)
The card does not work well....it does not work poorly....it absolutely does not work at all. Tried it with every setting I could image in UK, France and Italy. I am returning the card to them. I expect a hassle about the activation costs but this things does not work! Even a little bit.

Did you try it in your home network first? You might have to do that to get it properly activated. Did you call tech support?

It worked fine at home (well, moderately fine, if you dont consider the speed). I bought it to work in Europe. It didn't. Yes I called tech support (which by the way is quite an experience at Cingular these days)

I didn't think Orange had launched EDGE yet? They are launching UMTS now. No country in western Europe has EDGE AFAIK.

IMHO, expecting a US company to understand how networks work in Europe is a big mistake. You have to do your research on your own.

This discussion seems to be going on in two threads so I apologize for my part in that. Cingular said it would work, the brochure says it will work although it didnt. I appreciate everyone's input and suggest we leave it that.

The same one that my (Cingular) Blackberry works on. Actually my Blackberry (set to automatic) was on serveral networks during a 3 day visit. Yes, I assumed it would be GPRS speeds.

I have heard problems with not being...

I have heard there are problems with the card (or SIM) not being provisioned for international data roaming. It is something that is painful for them to admit... I would keep askign the question. To test it, take the SIM out and try it in a phone.... if it registers on a network, it is provisioned.

Sometimes I think no one knows how GSM/EDGE/etc.... works outside the US (the phone companys are the no-ones I am talking about).. good luck...
