DVD to mpeg?

Be gentle I'm new to this ;)

So I bought a DVD recorder to transfer some VHS tapes. So far so good. Burned the DVD - works on dvd player BUT I would like to view on my pda or on a laptop w/o a dvd player (eg transfer files to hard drive)but with a dvd player software (eg nero). The format that the dvd recorder writes is not readable by either the computer or pda - it is a .vob format.

Is there a way to change this to mpeg or avi or.......

Use dvd decrypter and then dvd2avi to convert and compress the files.

.vob is just an mpeg2 file with a different extension. You should be able to point a general purpose media player (like VLC ) at the file and it will work without any other processing.

Of course, if you tried to do this with encrypted movies, the result might be different :(

WinDvd will play .vob files

Take a look at WINAvi. I use it for simple stuff and, although a little slow, it works fine. But any compression is going to be very slow and my computer is older than it should be.

Also take a look at Dr. Divx. I haven't used it but the divx format is very good and constantly getting better. The other is Xvid though I don't know the compressor software for it. Like divx, xvid is a very good codec. I am sure if you go to the website that they will point you in a good direction for some compression software.

Clever play on words considering that the author of DVD Decrypter got served with a C&D and chose to comply as well as surrender the domain name.

Doom9 and a few others still have the final (and free, did I mention free?) version, 3.5.4 available for download here Get it while you still can.

DVDDecrypter and AutoGK with xvid.

www.doom9.org is a great resource.
