Good website visitor counter to use?

Building a basic website and was wondering what is a good free website counter service to use?

I haven't used it but http://www.statcounter.com/ says theirs is for free.

Do you have rights to run scripts? Maybe you could search for code that would allow you to do this on your host server. That would be completely free.

I always enjoyed Nedstat back in the days before I hosted my own stuff...

I've used one from www.bravenet.com. They have lots of other tools as well. Free for basic stuff, pay for more advanced, but even the free ones have lots of options.

I've been told that many sites use something called Sextracker. ;)

I think I do? I'm still new to creating my own site. I'm hosting it on easycgi does that mean i have the rights? or does the site have to physically have to reside on my machine?

I use StatCounter to track all my stats on websites I maintain. Works great, and the ease of a free counter without too many advertisements is a big plus.

First, check to see if your space provider provides stats for you already. I was pleasantly surprised that one of the ones I use provides very detailed statistics from their control panel.

I use sitemeter, it's free, gives me very good information, it's free, and requires just a fwe lines of code cut and pasted.

I also use sitemeter on some blogs and I have been very pleased.

I don't like Bravenet, since it appears to offer the least functionality (the thing I care about most is understanding what website my visitors come from, what search engine keywords they use, and where they come from)

http://www.gostats.com, and http://www.extremetracking.com win high praise in my book

Anyone know of a free counter that doesn't display the stats on the web page itself? Just stats that I can access behind the scences.
