Accessing an old Doublespace HD

I ahve an old drive pulled from a (gasp!) 386, which ran Win 3.1, and was compressed with doublespace.

I was hoping to pull an academic paper I wrote over a decade ago off the hard drive, and thought it would be as easy as attaching the old drive to my XP Pro rig, and accessing it as another drive.

But when I do so, all I see on the drive are the doublespace files, which presumably are the drives contents compressed.

Is there an easy way to access this info from XP without playing around with my current OS?

I did a quick Google search and the news doesn't look good:

No joy. That was a 16 bit real mode driver, which you quite explicitly
*cannot* load in XP. And is obsolete technology; there is no XP
equivalent. All you can do is load the drive concerned up in a Win95 or
98 that has it installed, and copy the files out to some other,
uncompressed, medium

So, doesn't everyone have a win98 computer in their basement?

Can you boot your new PC from the old drive by setting it as the master?
