Well, I shouldn't have implied that use of the plus symbol is officially in the standards. RFC2822 states: "The local-part portion is a domain dependent string. In addresses, it is simply interpreted on the particular host as a name of a particular mailbox." The use of the plus symbol as described in this thread is a feature of Sendmail.

There is a RFC-compliant method of using the plus symbol utilizing the comments portion (see http://www.faqs.org/faq-maintainers/.../Sep/0017.html ). Here's an example: <[email protected]> (Joe Shmoe+somedomain.blaa)

Unfortunately, comments tend to be stripped when you add your email address to a database.

The % and ! characters hae special meanings in (now antiquated) ways of addressing things. They can be used as separators for parts of an address, not as part of an address themselves. Ahh -- those were the days...

To your gmail address, add +XXXX when you use it to register somewhere online or buy something, or give out for raffles, etc. Number of +chars does not seem to matter.

You would do: [email protected] for example (not that I'm saying the NYT would sell your email).

Mail will get seamlessly routed to your gmail inbox. If you ever start getting major spam to +NYT, you can automatically route all +NYT mail to the trash or spam folder and change it to something else at the site. You also know who sold your email ID!

Same goes if you have a blog w/ an email contact there: [email protected].

It saves keeping up w/ numerous Hotmail or other accounts -- all you have to do is manage one now. Very slick! ^

That is really cool! Thanks for sharing this trick!

Btw.. just wondering, someone has told me before that if you have a gmail account, you can access a secret gmail "storage" space of your own .. eya.. not sure if I am explaining this correctly.. BUT if you do know what I'm talking about, can you explain exactly what it's for? and how to access it?

Thanks so much!

hehe.

Someone may learn about it still -- I just donated my old UUCP book from O'Reilly (circa 1987) to charity with a bunch similar era books. I felt bad about tossing them in the trash, and the newspaper recycling bin said no books, and the charity was happy to take them.
