As far as non-Apple Retail stores go, a few have closed, but not any significant proportion. With respect to iPods specifically, the number of retail stores carrying the product is skyrocketing. Foley's, Macy's, Saks, Nieman's, even Costco and WalMart... It seems there are more companies selling the iPod each week, and, in fact, more retailers signing on for other Mac hardware as well.

To get one cheap, here are some ideas...

- Check out the Special Deals on the Apple Store web site.

- If you can, consider shipping to Oregon, New Hampshire, Delaware or another state that does not have sales tax or buy over the Web from a company that does not have a presence in your state, like Amazon, so that you don't have to pay sales tax.

- Befriend someone who works for Apple :)

- Befriend a student and use their student discount

- Check out sites like DealMac for good prices

iPods play MP3, AAC, AA, WAV, Apple Lossless... iTunes will convert non-DRM WMAas well so that thy can be played on the iPod.

Hmmm, I'm slightly suspicious that we've an apple employee in our midst. :)

At any rate, someone told me that the Chicago store closed, and that apple was closing others on the basis that they were not profitable--that people were coming in and visitng/playing, but not buying.

Sorry if I was mistaken.

At least for me, the education discount saves $20 on a mini, $30 on the iPod.

nope, the stores are doing great. The Chicago store is a flagship store, and those are known to do gangbusters. According to IFOAppleStore,
53. Chicago, IL - North Michigan Avenue - (June 27) - flagship - free standing, city street, 3-story, glass staircase, skylight, rooftop garden, 24,000 square feet. Architect: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. It's the highest-trafficked store in the chain, with 30,000 weekly visitors. The building includes a 2-story retail space at the front, and a 3rd-story training facility at the rear, with a podium, rear projection screen and kitchen. The garden is planted with bright-green ground cover (not grass) within plastic holders instead of dirt.
Not really sure what that bit about the "ground cover" means. ;) sounds like astroturf. :)

Also check out http://www.ipodlounge.com . The forums are full of great information and most deals are posted there first. It's like FlyerTalk for iPod owners. ;)

I-Tunes

So you don't need to us I-Tune to put MP3 files onto the I-Pod.

Because I have a large collection of .mp3 and I don't want to waste time converting it before I can play it on the I-Pod

iTunes totally supports mp3 format. You don't have to convert anything. iTunes will also rip your CDs into mp3 directly.

I don't understand your post. Are you stating a fact/opinion or are you asking a question?

And BTW it's iTunes and iPod. ;)

I dont know if you HAVE to use itunes or not, I assume you do. BUT, installing it takes a couple of minutes, its free, it will sort out your mp3 files in a few seconds and works really, really well. Then you just transfer songs (files) to the ipod and do it again from time to time in order to keep your ipod and computer in sync.

BTW, ipod/itunes users are BOUND to sound like Apple employees. They're the ONLY electronic things I own that work this well as the margarita blender.

Any ipod users who are reading this should check out the Monster Cable car adapter. Reealllly cool.
(Hope its ok to say this, I do not work for Apple, Monster or American Airlines)

File Format

Jsut want to double check what file formats does the I-Pod accept

Does it accept wma?

Also for i-tunes. Can it convert different formats to ensure it plays in the I-Pod?

Yes. It "accepts" .wma files. I'm pretty sure that iTunes converts it to a .aac filebefore putting it updating the iPod- but it is tranparent to you.

I have a .wma file on my iPod.

So to confirm.

1) You need to use i-tunes to upload songs into the I-Pod. YOu can't simply just drag the .wma or .mp3 files straight into the I-Pod Drive? (like a USB Key?)

2) So you waste space in converting the wma to the .aac (apple file)??
