A warning for users of T-mobile devices with IM client...

Beware, as many of the new(er) T-mobile devices come with an IM client that doesn't use GPRS but SMS...

Take for example the new ipaq 6315; it comes with a GPRS modem AND WiFi, but it's IM client still uses SMS, making it much more limited AND you show up as a "mobile user" to other AIM users, and some users don't see you at all.

I'm warning you because unless you have a text messaging bundle you will be running up 5 cents per message in charges.

Just logging onto AIM can take as much as 3 or 4 messages, plus more every time someone logs on or off.

Why not grab an AIM client for the iPaq and use GRPS?

That IS the solution, but when you purchase a device like this, and it doesn't TELL you that it's working over SMS, and there is absolutely no way to know, then some people could be in for a nasty surprise at the end of the month.

I read on HoFo (from a fellow FT member :)) that the 7100t DOES use an SMS based client :( That probably explains why there are reports of the new 7100 plan coming with unlimited SMS.

Is this software unique to the 6315? I have an XDA running WM2003; WM2003 comes with MSN Messenger (which seems to be GPRS-based).

Yes, the "regualar" PocketPC has a data carrier based client, and AOL sells (or for free on the UK site) client that also uses regualar connections, but for some reason T-mobile decided to include this SMS client on their device. And I know some of their newer phones also use an SMS based client.
