If fact I was (VPN'd through a corporate network), though that was by accident rather than forethought. I disconnected from the VPN and was about to log in to ual.com when it occured to me that I'd rather stay as anonymous as my post here.

Thanks for the reminder though. Next time won't be by accident. :)

I had been carrying my Airport Express around with me religiously, except that everywhere I have been staying seems to have a BT OpenZone or a Swisscom Eurospot. Now I get to the Noga Hilton Geneva, and in addition to feeling like I have arrived in 1980, their Swisscom Mobile hotspot won't accept the Swisscom Eurospot voucher I bought in Amsterdam

They have wired Internet in the room, which is like 10 or 15 CHF/day cheaper than the wireless, so I was all excited, until I realized that I left my Airport Express in ATL, and now I am tethered :(

Teaches me a lesson, doesn't it?

This has been 100% successful for me using a Swisscom card in 3 different countries recently. When you get the Swisscom log-in screen, click on the country you first started using it in (ie not the country you are currently in). Then put in the code no and p/w. You should be fine.

Hmmm, I bought a 1 month pass through the web-based store from the login screen at the Hilton Amsterdam. When I bring up my browser, I get the Swisscom Mobile page, and over on the left it has a little dropdown for "Customers of other WLAN providers," and I pulled down the drop-down and selected "Eurospot." When I did that, another window which looks pretty much like the normal login screen I get in Amsterdam pops up.

I enter in the username and password I got when I registered in Amsterdam, and I get a page that says "An error occured Report: Technical problem: please try again later."

Not sure if it's really a "technical problem," or if it's really failing? Argh!

Thanks for any insight :)

I bought my card in Amsterdam also. When in the other countries I checked the "NL" tab and logged in fine. I thought the list of other countries was in the upper-right area on the opening page.

I tried clicking "NL" and all it did was give me the error in Dutch ;) Maybe it was because you bought the physical card? I did once buy a week card in Amsterdam and used it at the airport in Berlin, but this time I bought a month, which I could only get online since the week pass is the most they have in the lobby :(

Oh well... wired I stay.

Thanks,
Chris

Any new wired-to-wireless products currently being used out there? I would love additional FTer reviews.

Here are some links from Amazon just provided for reference (prices may or may not be the lowest out there):

3COM OFFICECONNECT WIRELESS 54 MBPS ( 3CRTRV10075-US ) - $70.99

SMC EZ-Connect g Wireless Traveler's Kit - $85.95

ASUS WL-330g Pocket Wireless Access Point - $66.95

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP w/ Client Mode, 802.11g, 54Mbps - $66.49

Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router - $69.99

Apple AirPort Express with Air Tunes - $112.80

Like some others, I'm leaning towards the Apple because it has a built-in power adapter and I can also charge my iPod without carrying additional hardware.

I use the Dlink one, it is much smaller than any other plus it can work as a cleint, an AP or a router.

Linksys looks to be coming out with a new one with a built in power plug. See article in PC Mag:

GadgetFreak, what type of laptop do you travel with? I cannot get into the setup of the Airport Express in order to establish the security with my IBM Thinkpad. The wireless internet part works fine. I just can't lock down the router with the Assistant Utility.

Unfortunately I cant help much on this because I travel with a Powerbook. I think there is a Java based program for PCs to configure the Airports but I dont have any experience with it. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Don't use the Assistant Utility. You can use the AirPort Admin Utility on the AirPort Express w/o a hitch.

I would recomend the Apple AirPort Express. I travel with one and have two at home in the Living room and my bedroom. Just to extend the range of your home wireless and to make your hotel room wireless (unless it already) is a great plus. I usually travel with a few people and we set up a network in our hotel and are able to Rendeuvouzs to eachother and listen to eachother's music via itunes. It is very handy and the best one out there that I have seen.
