USB Cable for Canon Digital camera

I forgot the cable to connect my Canon PowerShot camera to my laptop, and need to get a replacement. Are there generic cables that are readily available....????? Im sure the Canon original will be a fortune and Im not sure I will be able to get it anywhere... any ideas?

My camera is the PowerShot S320.

Thanks.

Just buy a USB card reader instead. Some camera cables are proprietary; some aren't. Not sure about your particular one. But the card reader is plenty cheap and probably more readily available. And it will be useful over and above the cable because it will give you the ability to dump the pics without wasting camera battery. Many card readers read multiple formats these days, but you just want to make sure it reads CompactFlash in your case.

If your laptop has a PC Card slot, you could instead choose an adapter that lets you read the CompactFlash cards using that slot. Then there's nothing external to carry around at all.

I got two free card readers when I bought two CF cards early this year. SO I presume a USB Card Reader could be had for under 10 bucks.

Not much help, I'm afraid, but FWIW the cable I have for my S400 ELPH is same as my sister's A70, so if you see a generic "canon" it should work.

Gaucho,
As someone else suggested, get a Compact Flash card reader. I have both a S40 and a A20 and this cheap one from SIIG http://shop4.outpost.com/product/3418693, http://www.siig.com/product.asp?catid=18&pid=254 works very well. Besides its small enough to pack for travel. There are similar readers from iomega, Dazzle and Lexar media.

This should work for you.

Don't worry, you can get a replacement anywhere.

Check out this product if you have a laptop with a PCMCIA slot. It is the size of a biz card and super portable. I don't even bother carrying the bulky card anymore!

A cheap solution if you only want to upload to your notebook:

Or if you want speed and have the money:

There's also a version that takes type II compact flash cards, but I can't seem to find one right now.

This looks like the 5 pin mini usb plug at one end. Same as the cord used for my Blackberry and for my Olympus digital camera. Also available at Best Buy and probably any digital camera shop or computer shop.

Huh? On my S400, it's a USB on one and and a standard mini-usb on the camera end. A generic USB-miniUSB works fine. The Canon cable has a ferrite on the end, but that's only for noise reduction. My other cable works fine. Radio Shack, Best Buy, CC, etc. all should have a generic cable that works.

ILoveEFD, You're right. The Canon USB cable is standard USB/mini-USB. I got it confused with another device's USB cable. I've gone back and removed my post that contained the incorrect info. I apologize for this mistake.

I took the Nikon Digital Photography 101 course, and the instructors warned us not to download pictures with a USB cable but always use a card reader. If you are downloading with the USB cable and the battery on the camera goes dead, you will erase all of the data stored on the flash card.
