Thinkpad x40- any experience?
 

Anyone have one of these yet? What do you think of it?

After waiting a month to receive it (we ordered on Feb 11), we get one later today for evaluation. Since, I run IT, I get to play 1st. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif I'll post my impressions next week.

They weren't kidding when they said 2-4 weeks delivery.

As far as I can tell, the only model in retail channels has a 1ghz processor. I'm holding out for the 1.2g.

EDIT: there are now about 5 models in stock at online retailers.

OK, here's my "it's been 2 days" review.

It's small, though in my mind, not significantly smaller than the X31. In fact I had to put the two side by side to really get a feel for how much smaller the X40 is.

Build quality is consistent with other thinkpads. Keyboard is thinkpad quality.

Battery life reminds me of my X20... you're not buying this for battery life, though.

Screen is good.

All in all, it's a tiny thinkpad. Personally, I'm in love with my T41 for different reasons. I'll stay with the T41.

What kind of life is that? 3hrs, 2?

I expected the x40 to be the same as the x31, but 0.9 lbs lighter (assuming the 4-cell model). The main difference, based on specs, is the inability to use standard 2.5" drives, meaining you can't get a larger capacity drive or a faster drive, such as the 60gb 7200rpm model.

Any problems, issues, etc.?

Published specs for battery life are 3.5 hours for the 4-cell model and 7.5 hours for the 8-cell

They charge $2800 for a 512Mb/40Gb X40 that IBM sells for $1800 and all they do is put Linux on it?

What is the advantage in that?

I can buy an X40 and chuck RedhatWS on it for $110 or Fedora for $0...

Somewhere around 2, though I always crank the display brightness all the way up.

It's a smaller form factor than the X31 in all 3 dimensions. Battery life I talk about is for the 4-cell. You are correct about the non-std size on the drives.

No problems or issues, but I wouldn't expect any after 2 days of use. From here it goes to our biggest road-warrior for real-life testing. I'll post back if anything comes up.

Im a die hard fan of IBM laptops. I have never used anything other than Big Blue laptops since the 1990s. Overall, I have to say that they are top notch, although my latest (and current) machine has been quite a lemon. I have a fully loaded T30 and have had a number of issues, including a zapped motherboard, modem issues, and now Im having boot problems...

I hate to think I may have to dump IBM, but Im very close to the end of my patience. My latest issues are related to a Smart Card reader... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/rolleyes.gif

Ive just read a review on the T41 and unfortunately, it doesnt look very good. Who knows, maybe these things will be addresses by years end when they introduce the a new moder (perhaps the T50?).

Gaucho - Not sure what machine the PCWorld author was using but the T41 does not have a multi-bay that accepts the normal IBM devices. The T-41 has the newer slim t-4x series bay that holds either a cd-rw/dvd or dvd+r drive.

Because of this error I am discount the entire review by PC World.

Overall my T-41p is the best laptop I have ever used. I have a T40, X31 and T30 in the drawer that were all great machines but the T41p is the best of the bunch.

Back to the topic - the X40 is very cool machine and is a bit smaller than the X31 it replaces. I miss the CF slot as I don't have many SD devices yet.
