Problems Updating Spybot S&D

Yesterday, Spybot Search and Destroy released new update files (detection rules, file check library and integrated tools). However, all of my attempts to update on my laptop (Win XP Pro) and desktop (Win XP home) have failed (the entire S&D program hangs and needs to be manually ended).

I even temporarily stopped firewall, popup and ad blockers and all that stuff, to no avail. Anyone else having this problem?

If I were you I'd completely uninstall S&D and do a reinstall with the newest version...

ScottC - that was Plan B http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

I just found it odd that I've been albe to update these systems before without problem. The connection is fine (broadband) and other updates (Synamtec, etc.) are running as normal.

I recently installed Spybot, and it hung on the update screen. Unistalling and reinstalling fixed the problem. However, it never seems to find anything that ad-aware misses, so I uninstalled.

This has been a consistent problem for ever...It normally takes me about 4 attempts before I can update sucessfully.

The GUI for Spybot is a little quirky when updating. When I update it always appears to be hung, when it is actually in the process of downloading the update. I too am on broadband, but a 600k update file from Spybot takes much longer than it would with any other program (slow servers?). My suspicion is it is updating, just not refreshing the screen while doing so. Have you ever just let it sit for 5 minutes when in this state?

Did you remember to switch the update server to one of the US mirrors? IIRC, the default option is in Europe and I've had the program appear to hang when I forget to switch to one of the US update servers.

(this of course assumes that you are in the US)

JSD - bingo !!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

Selecting the US Mirror (Rootboxen) did the trick - the update ran flawlessly.

Thanks very much for the tip (BTW the mirror option only becomes active after searching for updates - I assume this is because they send an updated list of mirrors with the update detail information).

The Europe (UniDo) mirror site has always been flaky. Too bad it won't REMEMBER the site you last selected when you do a future update.

Gee, I thought I was the only one.

When I couldn't get the update from inside the program, I went to the website and downloaded from there.

I'll have to check out the mirrors option.

edited to add: I just did an update search, and looks like there's another one today. I switched to the US mirror and it worked like a charm. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

as discussed in this thread -
http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...ML/000974.html - it seems Spybot is not longer very effective in detecting spyware.... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/frown.gif
