BootVice - free MS program to optimize booting?

I flew next to a IBM tech person that recommended I get this program to optimize my booting procedure on my laptop. Apparently its freeware from Microsoft. Does anybody know where I can get it and if its any good...? Thanks.

More appropriate for Travel Technology. Please follow it there.

The tool is called BootVis.exe ... but according to Microsoft the optimization this tool performs is already built into Windows XP (contrary to published reports, including one I had read a while ago, so that surprised me), and MS no longer offers it for download on their public website apparently.

In other words, like many folks, the IBM technician thought the tool did something it really didn't ... if you're running Microsoft XP it does that stuff automatically.

Sorry, I don't read Omni anymore ...

OK, so XP does this automatically. But, my booting process still takes ages.... is there anyway I can optimize this further. Ive already defragmented my hard disk. Any other tools...??

MisterNice Oct 15, 2003 12:05 pm

We all know time is relative but some numbers may be in order to access good/bad bootup times. My IBM ThinkPad T40 does a cold boot in 66 sec and that includes a virus program, Zone Alarm, connecting to Wi-Fi and some other stuff.

Mr. Nice, do you know what RPM your harddisk runs? Do you have a 4200 or 7200 RPM drive?

MisterNice Oct 15, 2003 4:23 pm

It silently spins at 4200 rpm I believe. I dont think the T30 and T40 ThinkPads come with 7200 rpm. I was going to put together an external USB 2.0 7200 rpm drive until I heard they were MUCH noisier and also ran hotter, thus I bought and am happy with the 4200 rpm internal and external drives.

Turn off all the services you don't need.

Failing that, just hibernate the laptop instead of letting it cold boot. That's my particular move, and it seems to work well (except that you have to boot it every few days anyway, lest it blue screen when windows gets cranky).

Well, I dont really have any superflous services I can switch off. As for the not cold booting... Im not confident enough in the stability of XP, so I dont think thats really an option.
