Wireless Network for Nepal

Hi - I am hopeful someone here can be of some help. I am involved with a foundation that supports a school in Nepal. The head of the school has spent many years in school in the U.S. obtaining his undergraduate and masters to be of help to children in a small village in rural Nepal (he started a school for K-10).

He has set up a computer lab for them using donated computers and the students are doing great learning new skills. He wants them to have internet access and has been working on installing wireless internet using scarce resources.

He has run into some issues on getting this Networking up and going. If any of you have tips or can help, I would greatly appreciate it and can put you in touch directly with him. Please email me with any help, questions, etc.

I have detailed diagrams of what they are trying to do that I won't post here due to space, but if someone has the ability to help with this I would be happy to email you those specifics.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give - this is way out of my league.

THANKS MUCH http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

hey, if you can get me a trip to Nepal to visit the lovely mountains, I'm there http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Thanks so much for your posts! I've emailed the details and look forward to hearing back from you.

As far as a trip to Nepal, I'm sure they would love to see you. It's just a short flight to Katmandu, then a 12 hour bus trip and then a three day walk. But there are lots of people who have made the trek http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif With computers in tow!

Thanks again to all of you! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Wow, that really sounds like a great adventure... I'm envious of those who are able to do this...

Three day walk??? Sounds like a hell of a weight loss program, where do I sign up??? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

I received the email and am working on it, I also urge anyone else to look into is as it's not your everyday WiFi setup (it's WiFi over 60 kilometers... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif ) It would be a major bummer if I sent someone out to walk 3 days to tweak an AP only to discover it doesn't help much http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Scotty, let me know if you need a hand. Our Cisco wireless stud at work is often bored and in need of challenges.

I wanted to update everyone and thank you for your help in getting wireless networking for Nangi Village, Nepal.

The wireless network has been installed and is working (still an issue with keeping batteries charged, but looks like that is moving forward now and should be resolved soon). The school is planning on using this communication capability to enhance the educational programs in the school and in delivery of medical services for the community. Teachers will be able to email teachers around the world to get information, exchange teaching strategies, and actually take university classes. Students will be able to interact with students in other countries. The potential for good is tremendous.

I am so thankful for my fellow flyertalkers for helping out with this - you do not realize what a help you've been! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif
