Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Air Purifier
Does anyone have one of these, or at least heard of anyone having any experience with these?
I am thinking about purchasing one of the reconditioned unit, but am not sure if the units really work. The most questionable aspect in my mind is that it does not circulate the air like a traditional HEPA suck-and-blow fan-filter unit does, and therefore think the effectiveness is diminished. This year has been particularly bad for allergies. |
Have 2 of these and find them quite helpful. Live in midtown Manhattan near a major intersection and there is a lot of dust, and heaven-knows-what in the air. Only downside is - have to clean them fairly often (high pollution area). Best feature - totally silent(there's more than enough noise as it is)! These really do freshen the air...

BTW, refurbed units are now on "sale" at Sharper Image stores and website.
$174.98 each, with any other purchase (including something cheap like batteries). |

I have a bunch of these and love them. I use them both at home and on my boat. They clean the air incredibly well which really helps with everything from allergies to stale air on the boat! They are definitely worth the cost in my opinion.

I just wish they would last longer. The new ones are heavy to keep lugging back to the store for an exchange. As well as they work, I am getting a little annoyed on their reliability.

Thanks for all of your replies.
I went out an got one, and it seems to be working OK. While I acknowledge that some people report problems with their units, I have had none thus far (knock wood). Nowhere in the documentation does it claim to be effective like a HEPA blow-sucker, and I don't think it's intended to. Perhaps those people were enticed by TV advertising, which I never saw. But as with nearly all ads, buyer beware! It does freshen the rooms, neutralizing even the familiar "home smell." I think it is more suitably touted as an air freshener than a purifier. In this respect, I would much rather pay the extra for an ozone generator/ionizer than those chemical fragrances which aren't good for you (allergic reactions). I guess only time will tell as far as reliability is concerned, but the unit comes with a 5 year warranty. |
Glad you are having good luck with one.
I can't say for sure if my ionic breeze works, but I'll say this: My neighbors have severe allergies due to the area we live in, and I have no problems at all. My neighbors bought an Ionic Breeze a few months ago, and they claim it has helped to alleviate the allergy situation significantly... |
After about a year a so, all of my units start making noise(hissing) while the unit is on. Does not matter how well I clean the receptacle. You are supposed to turn the unit upside down several times but the metal wires that run the length of the chassis on the inside get worn down. I have bought 7 over the last 5 years. As good as they work, I am starting to get tired having to return them all the time. For that kind of money, they should be problem-free longer.

If so, please relate your experience. |
I have no issue with the warranty period. I have had the same problem with every unit that I have purchased. They are bothersome to return as they are getting heavier and all of the Sharper Images where I live are in Shopping Malls where I have to lug these monstrosities around.
