Best Pocket PC
 

I was looking at PocketPCs in the office today and I'm about ready to throw my iPaq H5455 out the window. I need one with wireless and bluetooth. Should I go Toshiba or something else?

The best pocketPc is NO pocketPc.

Toshiba's e740 range SUCKS...

The WiFi model has bad reception and with WiFI on all you'll get is an hours use.

If you really NEED a pocketpc get an ipaq 5400.

Skip ALL the cheap brands like viewsonic etc... as accessories for them are rare.

You might consider the Dell models if you need cheap but for the best in the market the ipaq is the way to go.

P.S. Why not the P800???

Bluetooth on the e740 is also useless, they used some noname bluetooth module with a very instable stack. The screen still has software issues, syncing isn't always reliable (often no or dropped connections). They just released the e750 series, no expereince with that yet...

I'll get a P800 when T-mobile starts offering them.

The 5400 has integrated WiFi AND Bluetooth, why add the card? The PCCard module makes the Ipaq.... H U G E

Unfortunately, I've been given a piss poor implementation of a wireless infrastructure (all LEAP!). That hoses me out of using any other cards other than Cisco's (which require the sled).

Well, at least it's supported on the PocketPC... Make sure to get a PCCard jacket with internal battery, you'll be needing it...

I agree, sometimes the best Pocket PC is not a Pocket PC at all. Since I got my Blackberry a year ago, my poor little Pocket PC has sat on it's charger....all alone.

To me, having wireless e-mail is invaluable, my blackberry does contacts/calendar/etc... So basically all I really use it for.

Here are my requirements:

Email/calendar/PIM crap
Patient information (labs, vitals, I's and O's)
Communication (data, voice)
Possible VoIP implementation

oh yeah, and to play mp3s.

The thing with PocketPC's is that they are pretty much all alike... What you need is available in pretty much every pocketpc. I know there is an app to use the PocketPc as a Cisco IP phone (hurrah for you!!) so what you need is pretty much available in any pocketpc that will take PCCards (pretty much iPaq only then...).

What you'll be doing with patient information depends on the apps available, will it need to be a pocketpc native app or can is just suck it off the web? Do you want to connect to a terminal server or citrix server?

MP3 playback with headphone jack is available on probably every single PocketPC there is.

He could be utilizing a SQLCE connection via the Pocket PC. That said, judging from my experiance, TS could be kinda iffy if he's trying to get lots of quality, I would hope he's just doing a straight native of web app.

We've got our clinical package with a wireless component to it. You're connected to the network via wireless, and you log into the clinical package on the PocketPC. It will then pull your pt info depending on relationships (if I'm a medicine resident covering this particular floor, I'll need their info). And it's read only (we're working on the read/write) thus far.

And the mp3s were for... "listening to CME lectures." yeah, that's it...

Dude, on a more serious note, you might be better off taking a look at some of the more smaller tablet notebooks. You are probably quite aware that the speed of apps on handhelds is not all that great. You have much more flexibilty with a tablet and it is cool. Let me know what you decide.

I've still to see a tablet pc with the same battery performance as a pocketpc, sadly they are all heavy(heavier than a PPC) and with this being for a medical envirnment a tablet PC would pose too much of a theft risk, pocketpc's can be carried around much easier.

BTW, goat, why aren't you on the list for mexican food tomorrow?????
