Skype is dead as of May 5th 2025

https://www.theverge.com/news/621353...ement-may-2025

I know some of yall rely on Skype's international calling services. That goes away on May 5th.

Microsoft will honor existing Skype credits, but it will no longer offer new customers access to paid Skype features that allow you to make or receive international and domestic calls. Existing Skype subscription users will be able to use their Skype credits and subscriptions inside Microsoft Teams until the end of their next renewal period. Existing Skype Number users will also need to port their number over to another provider, as Microsoft is no longer supporting this, either.

Does anyone have a good alternative for Skype, specifically for making cheap international calls?

Doesn’t go away fully… as the Verge article notes, Skype credits get shifted to Teams, subscriptions work until the end of the subscription.

Changes to Skype paid offerings

Moving forward, we will no longer offer paid Skype features to new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions that allow you to make and receive international and domestic calls. Current Skype subscription users can continue to use their Skype Credits and subscriptions until the end of their next renewal period. Skype Credit users can also continue to use their remaining Skype Credit. After May 5, 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will be available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams.

This looks like a good alternative.

Does it offer a number for incoming calls?

If so, can I migrate my existing Skype number to it?

That sounds good.

Can I choose a number from anywhere in the world?

I live in the UK, but I like having an Irish number to receive calls for family reasons.

looks like the free consumer accounts might be US only. DIdnt realize that.

Oh, wow! We don’t use Skype anymore. We have WhatsApp on my iPhone and my computer, too. It’s all free. Skype is from the past. I remember I chatted with my brother in Switzerland. That was so long time ago!

Alternative to Skype

Any ideas on an alternative to Skype for calling BA for free out of UK hours? (at midnight).
I have become used to using Skype for this purpose, I don't use if for anything else though.
Microsoft is killing Skype in May 2025 so it will no longer be an option.
Alternatives?

(Note: Skype allowed you to call 0800 numbers in certain countries like the US and UK for free even with a free account, it's not clear to me if other suggested alternatives also allow this).

Google Voice only accepts ports from mobile US numbers. You will need to port the Skype number to a cell phone then to Google Voice.

I purchased the $3 Ultra Mobile plan ($10 sim kit and service) for the VOIP port then ported to Google Voice for $20. After porting to Ultra, I received the verification text from GV. I did both ports the same day. The process was Vonage to Ultra to Google Voice for our old landline. My wife and I both receive the GV calls.

I wonder about those who have credits but never a subscription. I've got some cash there for emergencies like when I was visiting China and needed to call a number.

Thanks for the info, but it could be a problem as my Skype number is not a US number.

I'm going to try Zadarma.

Google Voice isn’t an alternative for a non US number
