CarDongle Android PC
I've been renting 50-60 cars a year, usually for 2-3 days each, for about 20 years now. Like everyone else, I've had some great cars and some stinkers. At this point there are few cars that I will turn down, although I try to avoid GM products.
Over the past couple of years, however, Android Auto has been a must-have feature for any rental. I will actually wait up to an hour for an Android Auto-equipped car if none are available when I arrive. That's why this YouTube video caught my interest... While I will not be picking this particular item up, I think it may of interest to some FTers here, especially those that have the skills to upgrade this thing even further from it's Android 9 factory software base... |
I am not sure what you are trying to do. The review suggests the device is a little pokey but manageable. Forcing an upgrade to the latest version of Android (10) would probably make it even slower and make you lose the tweaking of the OS for the car screen. Looking at their version of Google Maps, it doesn’t seem optimized for the car screen. I would probably add the on device version of Android Auto for most purposes. You probably aren’t going to want to use the device for automotive diagnostics like the reviewer. The device won’t let you take control of infotainment system which doesn’t support Android Auto in the first place. Assuming your goal isn’t to run an unsupported program like Netflix on your screen while driving what are you trying to accomplish?
