Hangouts could do conference calls - you could be talking to one person, then add another to the call (as opposed to setting up a dial-in number for a conference call).

It does not appear there is any way to do this in GV.

Very happy to hear this. The very first thing I do whenever I get a new phone is disable Hangouts. It takes up a lot of memory, and it is impossible to uninstall with a bootloader. I have never once had any desire to actually see what it is capable, and apparently I am not alone. One less bloatware app for future phones; if only they would allow us to remove it from the existing phones. Running out of space on the primary memory is the reason all of my phones have become obsolete, and they keep decreasing the number of apps which can operate from a memory card. It is really my only complaint about Android, but at least we are allowed to have memory cards.

Weird, I haven't noticed it being particularly a resource hog on my OnePlus 6. I have noticed bugs in the past, though, that required me to clear cache/data to resolve. One particularly nasty one involved being in the process of sending a photo/video right when cell coverage dropped; sending further messages was impossible without the aforementioned data wipe.

That said, my group of friends will have to figure something out once it finally goes away (for instance, we're not too comfortable with WhatsApp due to its Facebook ownership despite personally having an account for international travel).

Now Mrs Swede can configure her phone GV app to call from her phone using wfi/data without a call to the states to complete the call. This update allows local SIMs to be used when traveling overseas which is why I used Hangouts. Bye bye Hangouts for me.

It took years of intense coaching (and probably $100 in unintended roaming charges) to get Mrs. Swede to properly make phone calls via GV web UI. No way am I about to tell her to change! :D

LOL. I am glad The GV app gives me the option to use data/WiFi instead of dialing a number so I will not have unintended roaming charges when I travel to Europe after Hangouts is retired.

Hangouts was also a way for Google Fi users to make / receive calls and texts from a different phone (but with their Fi number). It seems that there is no replacement for that functionality (as an app - it can be done in an awkward way by using Messages in a web browser).

I wonder if Google will enable Fi users to make calls and send texts with their Fi number from the Google Voice app - that would be a neat solution (especially since now Fi users can also have Voice numbers).

It looks like Google Hangouts, and the ability to make or receive wifi/data calls while abroad with Google Voice is going away. Because the Google Voice app uses a dial-back feature to connect a call, it's useless outside of the US/Canada for making long distance calls with your Google Voice number while on wifi-only, or with a foreign SIM card, and I don't believe the GV app can receive a call over wifi/data either.

Does anyone know of a Google or third party alternative dialer that will allow the use of a GV number while making or receiving calls over a wifi or data connection?

I've been using it to call US numbers for months with zero issues on wifi. In fact, I usually call people back rather than them calling me as the call quality is better.
