Getting calls last 2-3 days, did not pick up. Recorded message in Mandarin left. Today I answered it, live person speaking Mandarin came on, every 30 seconds I kept on saying " nee ha" ( my version of greeting). Caller was disgusted and hung up after 3 mins ! Let us see what happens !

Easy to screw with them, and easy to hang up if I have better things to do. You don't need to justify ending the call, just do it. Apparently my number is spoofed once in a while, and I get angry calls from people. If I have time, I will explain how things work, it's not me calling you, etc. Point being I'm about as numb to this as it gets. Horribly annoying though. Wife gets annoyed, won't answer any unknown number on her cell or wait for it, our home number. Yes, we still have a landline.:)

Just hang up and move on. Or if you have a little time, ask them detailed questions, offer to meet in person. "Oh you are in SLC? Great, I can meet you in person at your office as I will be in town in a few days, just give me the address." But strange that you sound like a complete idiot and have no clue what John Smith with XYZ company should likely sound like. So then I offer to fly to XYZ Country to meet with them, that's when they hang up on me and never call back. So if I have the time, about 2 minutes time and I do my best to scare the heck out of them. I claim multiple roles, who I work for, etc. Forget your daily tv and create something fun and help scare the heck out of the moron calling you.

A scam on eBay used to involve fake goods and a foreign location. So for example buying a luxury handbag or phone on eBay uk you'd see something advertised as.coming from another country. Have a look on that country's eBay and they aren't selling it there which is a little odd. The idea being that you are unlikely to be collecting the goods in person. Therefore unlikely to spot the fake until you receive the item several days later. By which time the seller has made off into the sunset with your cash. It may still happen but I've stopped looking for those sorts of items.

I don't use E Bay....I thought there was some kind of "protection" against fake products ?

I thought it was PayPal that traditionally provided the buyer protection in the past. I think eBay themselves are starting to provide their own protection now that they're gradually going away from using the former.

Yeah traditionally if you didn't use PayPal you weren't protected against fraud. They also say if you don't complete the sale on eBay then you're also not protected. Some auctions however still say payment by bank transfer/Western Union etc. only. I've also seen cash on collection on some (mostly larger) items.

It seems I get one to two of these a day. IRS scam. Social Security Number scam ("your number has been suspended due to fraud"). Computer scam. Computer software refund scam. Federal Grant Scam.

My favorite is when I'm in the middle of a long drive and they call, I'll try and keep them on the phone as long as possible. My record is 16 minutes.

I've learned you have to be very careful of your tone. They're good at detecting sarcasm as well as people who clearly know it's a scam. I've learned it's best to act like you're a little hard of hearing. So for example on the computer scam where they want remote access to your laptop purposefully mishear them. When they say "B" say "V"? They'll typically say something like "B like Boy" so you can say "oh so not V like Victor" etc. Having them repeat things eats up a lot of time. As does correct answers to questions that require explanation.

"We have reports your computer is infected"
"Oh well I have a lot of computers, which one?"

He heug up, elapsed time 7 minutes.

I flew thru ohio on my way to OGG and suddenly began getting almost hourly spam calls with spoofed ohio area codes. Coincidence ? Perhaps. I now just send all calls to VM, since most spoofs think you're on the mainland and come in the middle of the night there.
We can send a spacecraft to Pluto, but can't fix this?

I love wasting their time (when I have time) especially when I get a call from India about a virus in my Windows computer. I act interested and tell them that I need to get my laptop downstairs. I wait couple of minutes and tell him that I now need to start my computer. I wait a few more minutes. He keeps asking if the computer has started yet but I tell him that my computer is very slow. I then follow his instructions, poorly as if I knew nothing about computer. Eventually, When I had enough I tell him that I have a Mac.
Another variation is to put them on hold or just put the phone down and tell them you'll be right back and just leave the phone alone until they hang up.

If I answer the phone and it turns out to be a live scammer, I tell them to go fk themselves. They normally take you off their list so you don't get repeats.
