Inconsistent hardware scan warning
The Lenovo quick hardware scan for my Thinkpad 11e shows a warning for the two SMART tests--most but not all the time. The detailed scan shows these two tests as passing. Windows checkdisk scan doesn't show any problems. Should I be concerned about the hard drive dying soon? If so, what cloning program do you recommend, based on ease of use? I'm traveling later this week and don't have time to install the OS and programs before leaving.

I have a NAS whose SMART tests have been warning of imminent disaster for five years. I'd just make sure your data is backed up and worry about it when/if the drive actually crashes.

As Dave says, there's a good chance you will have nothing to worry about ... for a while (which could be years). Still, for suspenders-and-belt security, cloning your hard drive might not be a bad idea (once a week? once a month?)
I used to use a program (free) called XXclone and I loved it. Unfortunately, the author/CEO of the company passed away a while back, and the program no longer works. I'd be interested in what other folks are using, too. |
I just use my Crashplan backup - cloud and a local USB drive. When I had a drive fail, I restored from the local USB backup in about 3 hours. I had the cloud backup as a .... backup backup, I suppose. That would have taken days to restore, but at least it was there.
