The update that won't die!
 

Running Win 7 Pro. I have my updates set for download, I'll tell you when.

I got an update today, listed as Important. The update is:

2018-04 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4093118)

It's only 30K, so I installed it. Went in fine. No reboot required. Then, a short time later, I got a notice about another update. It, too, was small, so I installed it. Again, no reboot. Hmmm

I checked my list of installed updates, and I find that this update was installed last Sunday, and four times today. The same update. And, it keeps showing up to be installed.

Anyone else ever run into this? I've never seen it before - the closest I've come is an update that failed and it'll try later, but never when the update was successful.

I clicked on this because I sat in front of my Win7Pro laptop for an hour this morning, as it said 'installing Windows updates. 100% complete' and thought that it might be related.

But I see that update (KB4093118) installed on my machine last Friday, April 13, and I've had no reminders since. I have my updates set to 'warn me when they're available and I'll choose to download'

I do remember something like that (updates re-downloading) when they were trying to get us all across to Win10, but nothing since.

It turns out I'm not the only one having this problem. That particular update (and its' associated predecessor) have been a bit of a problem for a number of people.

I tried the Update Troubleshooter - it says it fixed most of the problems, but not the one I'm having.

There are a couple of complicated fixes but I didn't have the heart to try them.

Then I stumbled across someone's note on some web page - he sez he just did the old right-click/hide routine. So I tried it and, hey,presto! Update gone, never to return. All is well (so far, anyway)

It seems MS has been having problems with their update procedure for some time now. Oh well.

Related to this is the Windows 10 1803 update. It's the major spring update. and it just about killed my Dell yesterday. The installation got stuck at 44% for hours, and I finally forced a shutdown. That led to "restoring previous version", followed by "repairing the disk" for several more hours. It finally came back to life, but now it is trying to redo the update. I tried stopping it (I am using the Home Edition, where stopping updates is close to impossible) using the "metered connection" trick, but that didn't work. I found a solution using the general policy editor, but that option is disabled on the Home Edition. I was able to get the GP editor running, and changed to requiring my permission before installing the update - here is hoping!

I have developed a healthy dislike of MS. Loads of users are experiencing this problem. During the fall update, it killed my older PC. I eventually took it to MS, and they couldn't fix it without doing a complete wipe. I really question the quality control of MS. :mad:

This is the reason I have Windows 10 Pro so that if an update fails or does not work I can "hide" the update or stop it in the policy editor. Its worth the $$$ to upgrade to Pro for this reason alone. Sadly Microsoft forces updates on the Home edition. No rhyme or reason as to why except they think that non-power users will accept updates at will thinking their security will be breached if they don't update only to find out that an update kills their system and now they have to pay $$$ for someone to fix it.
