Possibly, but I have a small handful of USB Portable hard drives which use A-A cables. They seem to be sturdier than the "micro-B 10 pin" connectors on my others.

Part of the problem with an A-A type connector is that USB is a serial connection - there are 2 power wires (5v+, 5v-) and 2 communication wires (TX, RX). A device using an A-A connector would either need to have the TX and RX reversed onboard (in the hardware), or would need the cable to be non-standard by connecting TX to RX and vice versa - much like a null modem cable in the days of old.

I know that the wires are actually Vcc/Gnd/D+/D-, but it doesn't really affect the understanding of the issue, so I simplified)

that's interesting as I have a few devices that have USB A - A cables. They're mostly USB hubs and that KM switch mentioned above.
