Which apps help you enjoy your flight?

I’m looking forward to my first proper long haul from LHR-SFO and beginning to consider getting my iPad ready for the many hours in the sky. I’ve never really found BA IFE sufficient and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for apps or games to help get the time in? :D

Sky Go and BBC iPlayer loaded up.

I usually pass the time between looking at the IFE and reading books, newspapers or magazines. Not really into electronic stuff.

A few months back I was on a BA 777 to BKK and the IFE selection was pretty dismal and the screen not very responsive. I’ve got higher hopes on the A380 though :)

Buy a KINDLE :)

We couldn't count the number of sectors, both long and short, where they have been the most essential travel commodity. Loaded with FREE books, of course. Also available on iPad.

If you need moving pictures, I defer to others.

A real book

I think audio books are underrated by travellers. I carry at least a dozen books at all times and often prefer relaxing to a book than watching a screen when travelling.

Sky Go and Netflix...and Kindle

Bose noise cancelling headphones are for me the essential long haul accessory. I've got a pair of the over ear ones, the missus swears by the new quiet control Bluetooth ones with an in-ear fitting.

One less obvious App that has given me a lot of enjoyment is the BBC's Radio App, which works with fewer licensing issues compared to BBC iPlayer. You can hoover up programmes from all of the BBC's stations and download them for the flight. The other Apps I find myself using are Spotify and the Amazon link from Kindle. The Kindle is fantastic on flight, I do a lot of reading, but on a short hop then the mobile phone App version is a good substitute for an hour or two. And the photo apps, for preserving those travel memories for the future.

I just looked at that. Excellent suggestion. There are some very good programs on there, absolutely worth the license fee.

Thank you cws!

I read books on my phone (iBooks and Kindle) - if I want to sleep the latest 'action film' provides the necessary white noise to send me to the land of nod !

The apps I like don't work in flight :(

Flyover Country - preload maps of the flightpath and the app uses GPS to track progress (so works in flight-safe mode). Useful for when flying airlines without IFE/screens with moving maps. Like a lot of my short-haul BA...
