What is PokeFi?
Pokefi is a type of "MiFi" (or mobile WiFi network) device.

What is the cost of using PokeFi?
The price is of the device ranges from US$125-200, depending on where it is bought and then costs US$3/day or US$3/GB for data.

Where can I use PokeFi?
It is compatible in 60 countries

Expert Advice: Beware inconsistency of connection speeds and battery life

What are some alternative options?
Competitors include GlocalMe and Skyroam. Substituting SIM cards in a phone is another method.

Of note:
  1. It does get warm for long usuage. So try to give good air circulation from time to time while using it.
  2. It doesn't charge well when it is in use. Turn the connection off before charging. Otherwise it may take forever to charge.
  3. Try to turn it on and establish internet connection while you are stationary. I once drive from Ottawa to Toronto and my wife turned it on while the car was in motion. It never established a connection for the whole trip. But if the connection was negotiated before I drive, it was good for the whole trip.

I also noticed that the Fortress outlet at the check-in area (landside) were selling them yesterday. No idea of their actual stock though.

Sound & Vision (S&V) have 3 branches at HKIA Terminal 1:

- Arrivals Hall, Arrivals Level (L5) [Landside]
- Near Gate 201-230, Departures Level (L6) [Airside]
- Near Gate 60, Departures Level (L6) [Airside]

Fortress have 2 branches:

- Terminal 1, End of Check-in Aisle E, Departures Level (L7) [Landside]
- Terminal 2, Check-in Hall, Departures Level (L5) [Landside]

Depending on whether you're arriving, departing, or transiting at HKIA you will have an opportunity to check at least 2 of those 5 outlets.

IIRC S+V T1 airside was open quite early. I did not Mark down the time but my departure was around 8am.
I spoked them about Pokefi and they mentioned that they get these in batches and when sold out they need to wait for another brach.
However the wait time between batches is not as bad as initial roll out time and they did not anticipated the demand.

The opening times for S&V are listed on the HKIA web site here. They even list phone numbers for each branch, so I guess you could call ahead of your arrival and check their stock.

You need to check in person, if they have it, great. If not, next trip.

Time is a valuable commodity in HK.
Staff's time usage efficiency at the airport stores are better spent on selling what they have in stock as oppose to answering the phone.

Used my PokeFi this weekend in Fukuoka Japan and it worked great. Speed was about 10-20mbit depending on area. more than fast enough for looking up directions, using yelp/trip advisor and playing on social media.

I'm debating on ordering a couple more as gifts.
