https:// issues with gogo

I am on the plane right now (AS750) and I am having a ton of issues getting to sites that are defaulting to https:// (such as United.com, gmail, and facebook). Even when I manually try to enter the full address as http:// it defaults me to https and the load fails.

The webpage at https://www.united.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED
Does anyone have an easy answer to this? Typically my browser is chrome but i am also having issues with IE.

Maddening

Sadly, you'll probably get less response here as it's more of a general travel question. it's just not techies that use Gogo. Try complaining to them. They'll throw some money at you. I'm lucky if I can get it to work at all. I wonder if HTTPS might be the issue though now.

Perhaps related to their enforcement of no streaming?

Was on AA120 CDG-JFK and had the same issues. As a previous poster said, it has to do with Gogo's network management practices. In order to know what you are doing and manage their bandwidth, they must insert a device mid-stream to decrypt, inspect, then re-encrypt your traffic. Your device recognizes that the SSL encryption certificate it expected is not authentic and raises the error. While you might think you can trust gogo, I would never trust them or anyone else. Understand they can see *all* the traffic in clear text. This means any passwords, usernames, or other confidential information you may be trying to protect with encryption is open for easy reading by them. The same is true for boingo.

Thanks for the explanations. Makes the service a lot less useful.

Thanks for posting your issue, it gives us the opportunity to look into things and fix these error messages. There are two issues in this thread I would like to address. The HTTP intercept issue brought up by the previous poster is definitely not related to a Gogo flight. That route and aircraft type are operated by a different company, and customer care is offered directly by the airline. Gogo does not use any technology to intercept your HTTPS traffic.

As for your error messages and inability to browse certain sites, this is most likely caused by your IE configuration, which could include a proxy server setting. We would love to help look into this. If you send me a PM, I would love to make this right and will get you in touch directly with a customer care expert.

Thanks,

Scott@Gogo

No, they just fake the certificates:

That is definitely no longer the case:

I've generally found that connecting to my corporate VPN fixes any and all issues with Gogo (as well as other annoying hotspots that try to do various forms of "traffic management").

Yup, if you funnel all your traffic thru a VPN tunnel, they can't tell what you're doing. I highly recommend the use of VPNs for shared wifi (i.e. hotels, airports, gogo, etc.). Not for the non-tracking part (which is also good), but for security reasons.

I'll take your word for it, however, I don't put a whole lot of stock in an article "by Guest Author" on a site I've never heard of. :)

Actually, if that is the most reputable source one can cite it makes me all the much more suspicious. Always consider the source!

We don't need to. The article cites a specific person at Gogo by name: Gogo spokesman Steve Nolan, and he doesn't seem to be a difficult person to find:
