iPhone transfer to new computer questions
Gang,
Just got a new Dell laptop.... and transferring everything over. Question.... first time I connected my iPhone 6SP+, iTunes did not come up as it did on the old machine... instead a window came up "Phone Companion" asking how I wanted to access my phone. Have I lost the ability to just use iTunes to sync with Outlook or am I missing something? Appreciate any advice. |

Did you install iTunes on the new computer?
Your phone will sync just fine with your Exchange server over the air. No need to use iTunes. |
Yes, installed iTunes. But it does not show iPhone when I connect.
I have no idea what the Exchange server is! :-) I still use Outlook to manage my calendar.

Gmail and Rochester.rr.com accounts into Outlook
|
If you set up the Gmail account on your phone, it will sync your Gmail contacts and calendar over the air...does the Time Warner account include a calendar or contacts? If so, I'm sure they've made those available for over-the-air sync.
There shouldn't be any need for syncing anything through iTunes. |
There are still valid reasons for using iTunes (local backup, etc) and it should work.
I found this .. you have to find and turn off the autoplay feature that starts the Microsoft Phone Companion App when you connect your iPhone. https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/com...one_companion/ You could also uninstall it, but that seems like overkill. One day you might want to use it if you buy into the Microsoft cloud (onedrive, photo backup, etc.) So I'd recommend finding the Autoplay entry for your device's model and setting it to "take no action" as suggested in the reddit post. I hope that helps. -David |
So, I took the advice to "Do Nothing" with Autoplay.
Now, still have a problem. I have iTunes installed.... but when I connect my iPhone... it is not showing in iTunes.... on my old computer... it would show... and I could Sync... which is how I got my calendar entries from Outlook onto the iPhone. Any suggestions? |
Get Laplink PC mover. I paid 29.99 and it was the best money I ever spent. Almost everything, including itunes, transferred over without any issue in a couple of hours.

Everything has been moved. For some reason, iTunes does not show iPhone when I connect it to computer

ETA: Try this first (check device manager) ... https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204095 I was going to suggest what I wrote below, but I would try the steps in that article first to resolve any driver issues. iTunes includes a set of drivers for usb and their devices that Apple issues, so you might have a conflict there that needs to be resolved. If that doesn't work ... Try uninstalling the Microsoft Phone Companion app. Some discussion about that in that reddit thread. You might also try reinstalling iTunes if that doesn't fix it. I think that should also reinstall Apples drivers. If there are still problems, try the steps in that Apple support article again to see if there are still driver conflicts/issues. Good luck and report back :) -David |
Well... after going into the Apple store... as well as on the phone with Microsoft and Dell support, I have given up... this was the third laptop in a month.... all three had Wifi and iPhone connection issues.... so I have decided to return this machine... I guess the deal was too good to be true... :)
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/...ingsandreviews That was the system I had purchased.... anyone have another recommendation for something similar in the same price point? |
I think the iphone/itunes thing was because of software (microsoft phone companion) issue, not because of a hardware issue.
If you have the issue again on your next laptop, try removing the microsoft phone companion app and reinstalling iTunes if necessary. -David |
I did do that... .and it did not work at all.... still would not recognize the iPhone.
