Verizon Wi-Fi Calling
My LG G4 just updated last night to Android 6.0.
Wi-Fi calling is now an option under Advanced Callings in Settings. One thing is not clear. There is an option of using Wi-Fi or Cellular connections while roaming. The warning concerning roaming charges appears only next to the Cellular option. Does that mean that making calls to the US via Wi-Fi while traveling abroad does not incur additional costs? If so, that can save the daily $2-10 fee for using Verizon Travelpass while on short layovers. |
That's correct. Wifi calls from anywhere in the world are charged as if you were in the US.
I've been running the iOS 9.3 beta 3, which also enables Verizon wifi calling on the iPhone. Wifi calling works pretty well. The beta iOS has a few bugs, but nothing major. http://www.verizonwireless.com/suppo...-calling-faqs/ The Wi-Fi Calling feature is available at no additional charge, as it is included in your existing monthly voice plan. Your Wi-Fi calls to US numbers, regardless of where you are located, are also free of charge (except for 411 and other premium calls). Wi-Fi calls to international numbers will be billed as "International Calling While in the US" (also known as International Long Distance). If an international rate plan exists on your account, the international calls will be billed at those rates. A Wi-Fi Calling icon will appear on your screen during the call to confirm that it is using Wi-Fi to connect it. If the call is using the Verizon or a roaming network, standard voice charges apply. |

Thanks. |
What settings do you put your phone on to make sure that you are only on wifi calling and not getting hit with roaming? Just turn data off and enable wifi? I also have LG G4 with Marshmallow :)

The other option, "Prefer Other Cellular Networks," displays the following warning: "Roaming charges may apply." It is a bit vague, but based on the wording, I draw the inference that preferring Wi-Fi disables the use of other cellular networks. Yes, make sure to turn off data roaming (under More | Mobile networks) to avoid being hit with data roaming charges. |
Does this work any better than Google Hangouts? GH has done just fine for me, including incoming calls.

There is a lot of good information in Verizon's Wi-Fi Calling FAQs.

Verizon wifi calling abroad
When I was in Singapore and Bangkok, I received calls and texts from California when my phone was on airplane mode but connected to WiFi. Does this Verizon Wifi calling include wifi texts as well?

Can someone else confirm Verizon supports WiFI texting? One of my friends has a VZ S6 and says it doesn't work over WiFi.

Verizon Messages syncs messages across multiple devices (smartphone, tablet and computer). Switch between devices whenever you want and keep the conversation going. Make and take calls on your tablet over Wi-Fi or cellular, domestic or international. |

Texting works perfectly on WiFi (and cellular) with the Verizon Messages app. The plus is that it syncs my messages across all of my devices.
I tried to do a search on reddit and found old thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/com..._wifi_texting/ |

Not familiar with this app -- is it similar to iMessages? Most important, is it free like WhatsApp, Line, weChat or does it incur roaming fees if used internationally?
I tried to do a search on reddit and found old thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/com..._wifi_texting/ Verizon Messages is free for Verizon subscribers. It is used instead of, not in addition to, the phone manufacturer's messaging app. When I activated my phone (LG G4), I had to choose between LG's Messaging app and Verizon Messages as the default app. Unlike WhatsApp and Google Hangouts, Verizon Messages can send and receive messages via cellular. Whoever started that discussion on Reddit is wrong. Verizon Messages (also known as Message+) enables phones to send and receive text messages via WiFi, data or cellular. When I put my phone in airplane mode and turn on WiFi, I can send and receive text messages just fine. As long as cellular or data connections are not used internationally, there are no roaming charges When using Verizon Messages. From Verizon Messages FAQs: Can I use Verizon Messages while I'm in another country and what charges will apply? Yes, you can use Verizon Messages while in another country using Wi-Fi, mobile data or a roaming network. Verizon Messages 5.0 and later will prefer Wi-Fi when roaming and then mobile data if Wi-Fi is unavailable. International roaming networks will be used when Wi-Fi or mobile data is not available for Messaging. Domestic message rates will apply when using Wi-Fi or mobile data. In addition, international data roaming charges will apply when using mobile data. International messaging rates will apply when using the international roaming network to send and receive messages. |
The one drawback to Verizon Messages+ is that it doesn't sync texts you send from your computer to the "sent messages" bin on the phone. I can live with that, though, for the convenience of typing texts on the computer when I'm sitting there anyway.

If you have wifi calling on and your phone says VZW WiFi, you can send regular text messages through it like normal.
I don't uses the Verizon Messages app. It was nice before wifi calling came to iOS but it's superfluous now. |
