Free Pop Global

I'm just tossing this out there. I am not sure that I am buying, but Free Pop is now offering a transborder data plan:

Thanks, this could be interesting if it works in my USB dongle.

Presumably this works in wifi only. I'll try to find out more.

I tried to order the SIM.

FreedomPop Global SIM

A new trio SIM with global data works in all compatible devices including Google Android and Apple iOS smartphones. The SIM will automatically be remotely updated as new countries are added to global coverage.

Price: £10.00 (Retails for £10.00)

Temporarily Sold Out
No facility for letting me have an update.

They also have a US$50 mifi device one available. I guess you get the sim and mifi for US$50, same tariff.

Once they launch in Asia (which hopefully will be end of the year), it will be a pretty solid sim to keep for travelling.

I've used their domestic product for years and love it. Still can't figure out how they make money.

I'm mildly intrigued with this offering after reading an article announcing it. However, I have a bad feeling that demand is going to vastly outstrip supply for a long time and we are going to continually see "Temporarily Sold Out" on their website for a good long while. Hope I'm wrong, but...

Regards

If you stay within the purchased usage, you come out ahead. But the overage charges are probably where FreedomPop makes most of their money. Great for me--I'm a single-person household with a limited use case for FreedomPop. Maybe not so great if you have multiple users all pulling from the same pie or if you are a power user. An internet search for FreedomPop uncovers a lot of posts from folks who didn't pay attention and got burned. I've never had an issue, but I monitor my use closely. I'm about to bail on my home phone with internet included because I have a work phone that provides unlimited internet usage. I use my FreedomPop account for things I wouldn't necessarily want my employer having easy access to. There's very little of that--personal banking, setting up flights and hotels for personal trips--and FreedomPop gives me enough at a reasonable price.

To me, it's the opposite of all-you-can eat buffets: sure if everybody eats like a pig, the restaurant can't make money. Flip the business model, and you've got FreedomPop.

$10 for each additional 500MB while travelling internationally seems like a great deal. I wonder if I can buy the mifi but just use the sim in my iPhone.

The site says it comes with the SIM. Also, the stateside link is here: http://freedompop.com/global

I went ahead and ordered the mifi from the UK site at GBP50, yes more expensive than the US site and also top ups will be more expensive, but I have UK credit card and billing address, just in case there are issues with non-US payments.

Lets see (if and) when the device get delivered.

I understand it does come with a sim, if so, will probably just sell the mifi.

I just spoke to FreedomPop sales dept. (Mar 29) and was told the Global MiFi 2 unit
is no longer for sale.

They also said the Global SIM card is not available.

Any ideas where I may find a used one or something similar ?

Headed to France and Spain and need lots of data.

Thx!

I just placed my online order for the MiFi 2 global hotspot.

I also called the sales dept and was told that device is not longer sold.

Will my order be honored? If not any ideas where I may find a used one?

Thx!

I have received mine (based in HK, but ordered in the UK and brought over by family).

I think you can just use the sim card in any device (i.e. not locked to the mifi device). I was able to remove the sim without any problem. Likewise you should be able to use the mifi device with any other sim card (i.e. the mifi isn't locked).

@ $40 pre-owned, this looks interesting but I can't get beyond 'GET OFFER'.

Using the UK link, they want £58 for the mifi + 200MB free service, including shipping. All I need is the SIM. Trying to work out whether a one-off cost of £58 is worth it. (Amounts rounded.)
