This is a rough overview of the cellular "G" in the US. This doesn't include a iDEN or WiMax as just Sprint/Nextel used those.

1G = AMPS (Analogue)
1.5G = D-AMPS (A precursor to TDMA)
2G = TDMA, GSM, CDMA IS-95
2.5G = CDMA 1xRTT, EDGE
3G = EvDo, HSPDA
3.5G = HSPDA+ (often marketed as 4G since it could reach max speeds of 42 Mb down)
4G = LTE

Well if you go by marketing, always. If you go by technical definition, never.

Minor nitpick: It's HSDPA

What happened to roaming? When travelling through Illinois, I had no Tmobile service... no voice, anything. ATT service was supposedly there, but no automatic roaming to ATT. I could not forcibly select ATT.

In the early days, I would roam when I left service from one provider to another. If I go to China or Europe, my phone is happy to latch on to a non-Tmobile network... why not in the US? Is this my phone or that Tmobile doesn't have roaming agreements with other carriers anymore?

I'm curious as to what the OP ultimately decided to do - and also if the OP might be considering writing a Dilbert-style book on his users.
