changing your modem's password

I set up my new cox modem for wifi today and entered the ridiculous long password into my laptop to log on. How can I change the password of the modem and also the name of my wifi as it appears in available networks. Right now it's a bunch of jibberish and want to change the network name to "Ian".

Did they give you instructions on how to access the router's settings page?

Usually, it is accessed through your web browser by entering an address like: http://192.168.1.1

If you get the right address, a login box should appear. Once logged in, you should see links to screens where you can change your router's settings (including the network ID).

Sorry, not specifically familiar with Cox's setup. But that's generally how it works.

Routers are accessed by 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
Here's the info if it's a Motorola SURFboard: http://routerguide.net/motorola-sbg6...ogin-password/
Here's if it is Ubee:
http://www.ubeeinteractive.com/suppo...user-interface

Those are the two that Time Warner typically uses for the combined modem/router (it's actually the router part that you're adjusting, but I'm assuming you have a combined one or else it would be your personal router).

You're adjusting the SSID. That's what you want to change to Ian.
For security I'd recommend WPA2-Personal. Set the password to whatever you'd like that is long enough.

Thanks for the help guys. I have a ubee modem and unfortunatley it didn't work. When I typed in the 192. etc into a new browser page a window popped up from "Window Security" prompting me for a UN and PW. I tried my windows UN/PW then the modem UN/PW but neither got me in. That windows security message wasn't listed on that page's link you set me.

I'll try it on my personal PC instead where I have no windows pw and see what happens otherwise I'll just grin and bear it and call cox.

It shouldn't be your "Windows" UN/PW. The default user name might be something generic like "admin". The password should have been given to you by your ISP.

Time warner's most common defaults are:

root/root
user/user
admin/cableroot

Cox is my ISP and didn't provide me anything. They told me to look on the bottom of the ubee modem to get the UN/PW which I did to get set up.

What was wrong with the link to Ubee instructions that I provided?

login: user
password: user

I didn't see that initially..it works and was able to log on. However there were no options to change your modem UN/PW just change the account UN/PW which I did but I quickly found out nothing changed. Oh well!

Is this a combo modem/router or is your router separate?

Yes combo

There are three passwords generally for a combo modem router

Password used to login to administrate the system (that's the challenge on the browser)

Wifi password, also called key

Account password the modem uses to login to your provider.

Which exactly are you trying to change?

When you click available networks on my pc, I see my wifi there, no problem. The point is it's 20 character alpha/numeric number. The same for the password. I would like the change the name of my wifi to "Ian" and change to password to something that is easier to remember rather than a long PW that was provided.

chgoeditor Jun 22, 2015 12:42 pm

What's the exact model of the modem?
