Gmail + VPN + Apple Mail (iOS and Mac)

Hi tech folks

Does anyone have any tips for using Apple Mail on iPhone and a Macbook for Gmail via a VPN?

Doesn't connect to the server. I can access it via the webpage, I can also access it on the Gmail app on the iPhone. I just cannot use it with the native Apple Mail apps.

I also installed the Gmail Tab for Mac but that will not access it over a VPN either.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I think it should just work...what vpn software are you using? I sometimes use "VPN Unlimited" when traveling internationally and have not noticed any issues when accessing gmail either using their dedicated iOS app or native mail on ipad or mac book.

I use Black VPN

https://www.blackvpn.com/

Just hangs, emails stay in the outbox

I don't understand the question. If you mean using gmail with the stock ios mail app, it should just work. I'm doing it not on my iPad on a flight over VPN using the OpenVPN app. Try restarting your iPad?

Thanks for your input. It is not a restart issue, it simply doesn't work, waiting to hear back from Black VPN. Reading around there are other providers that have difficulty accessing Gmail and Hidemyass has a white list of IP addresses but due to there being so many, they cannot add them all

I set up 2 step verification as suggested on a forum, but no dice, still does not work.

It's not that iOS will not connect to all mail over VPN, works for me.com mail, just not Gmail

Cheers

sounds to me like a port you have configured in the email client is being blocked or not routed by your VPN provider - that's the place to start

Thanks for everyone's comments once again, turns out Black VPN blocks access to Gmail to prevent spamming so it was an issue specific to my provider rather than something general.
