Amazon Fire Stick - How to Better Control Screen and Cursor

We got an Amazon Fire Stick to use with our Slingbox - which works perfectly in theory except the quality is horrible and moving the channel selection up and down is enough to drive someone insane as each movement is 5-7 seconds.

Looking for another use rather than return it, we found that other Android apps can be installed to the stick and run on it, but it appears actually using those apps is problematic.

For example using the Chrome browser or the Dramafever apps are impossible because while you can scroll up and down, you can't easily move the cursor or focus from link to link in order to actually select and click something.

We tried the phone based remote control app, but it seems pretty useless for bridging this gap - any ideas on what other options might be available?

You're controlling the AFS through the Slingbox? I'm guessing it is for avoiding any regional restrictions.
