Chromebook Pixel (2015)

Chromebook Pixel review (2015)

Despite Engadget ruling it "impractical", I am seriously considering this device. At $999, though, it's time to start selling some old stuff. :D

It would be quite an upgrade from my Samsung Chromebook (2012).

Ordered the fast version along with an assortment of USB C cables. Shame no more LTE though :(

See Apple, this is how you implement USB C AND multiple USB ports.

Agreed on the USB front. I could even have understood Apple installing only USB-C (they do seem to like to be the vanguard pushing new standards), but there should be at least 2 of them since it's also the power port.

As for LTE, aren't most people just tethering now?

Not me. I loved having it built into my Pixel, made life nice and simple.

Fair enough.

I just pulled the trigger myself. The Ludicrous Speed (:D) version is overkill, but I've never wished I had less memory or less computing power.

Time to sell some old junk. :D

I can't wait to get mine. i7 and 16GB of ram just to run ChromeOS is insanity, but I hate owning gear that I know is not the best there is.

ScottC, do you know if it was fairly straightforward to install Crouton and run Linux in a tab on the original Pixel? I'm hoping to be able to do this with this machine. With these specs it ought to run as fast as a native Linux install.

I never tried it on my Samsung Chromebook (2012) because it already runs so slowly with just Chrome on it.

Mine shipped last night but I won't get it until Monday. Wishing I'd ponied up for 1 day shipping. :D

What about the Chromebook Pixel made you buy it vs the competition?

It has three more USB ports than the new and innovative MacBook?

What competition? I own a Yoga 2 pro, but have been using a Chromebook as my primary machine since Google sent me a CR-48. My current Chromebooks are the original Pixel and the the Toshiba Chromebook CB35. I'd never pretend like Chromebooks are perfect for everyone, but it does everything I want.

That said, even I would have to admit that the specifications of the new Pixel make zero sense just for ChromeOS :D

Fair I guess I should have asked you what your use case was first.

Yes, the specs on the new Pixel LS are ridiculous.

Mystery is why they gave up LTE?

Bigger mystery is why a chromebook needs so many ports in the first place.

I've been told that it is due to Verizon being jerks.

Same reason you can get it with Core i7 and 16GB ram - "because".

I see the Pixel as a playground for Google, not an actual product.
