Bluetooth visor speaker
 

My Christmas gift shopping task today is to find a bluetooth speaker/microphone that clips on a phone visor, for hands-free phone use. Mister Mister emphatically does NOT want a bluetooth earpiece or headset, he wants a speaker/microphone to clip onto the car visor. He was using an old Motorola one of mine that worked fine with his previous phone but apparently is not compatible with the Bluetooth version on his new phone.

I see mostly Jabra and Supertooth models on Amazon, $29.99 to $49.99, mostly. Are the all pretty much the same are is there one anyone would particularly recommend or recommend against?

Based on my experience, I'd stay away from the Motorola Roadster 2. I was happy with it at first, but I grew more and more frustrated with it at time passed; it would turn itself off at random times, go unresponsive at others, and it finally decided one day that it simply would not turn off.

It's been in the garage trash barrel for a couple of weeks now. Every time I toss something into the barrel it wakes up with its "beep-boop-boop-beep-BOOP" tone and says it's ready to pair :)

It doesn't clip to the visor though and it requires the car to have an aux input jack. If his car has a mp3 input, this is better than the ones with built in speaker.

Thanks, Dodge and Need, for the input. Perhaps I should have mentioned that neither car he'd be using the speaker in has an MP3 or aux input option.

My parents came to me with this question about a year ago, as Illinois made hands-free phone use mandatory. I did some research, and they bought a Jabra Freeway. They've both been happy with it since. One of them has a Samsung Galaxy S4 and 5 (upgraded this year), while the other had an Pantech slide phone. She uses a lower-end Samsung Android now. It worked fine with all of the phones.

I have the Jabra freeway, which is or was the one they sell at Costco. Works fine.

Though I keep telling myself I should just replace the stereo head end with a bluetooth version and add an external mic.

I just found out yesterday that one of the Freeways that they had died. I'm guessing it had to do with the smoking that my dad 'quit'. He quit around the house, he goes for drives everyday to smoke though. I don't know if that factors in, but the thing sits right above his head.

The other one is still going strong.

I ended up buying the Jabra Drive. Sweet Baboo is happy with it. I notice on the receiving end of calls that it's a bit staticky for the first 5 seconds or so; then the sound clears up.

I just went to Amazon to check which Jabra model I'd bought before posting this, and I saw the "Buy It Again" option and wondered if I should buy one for my own car --- because my Samsung Galaxy 3 w/speakerphone on isn't loud enough to hear someone while driving.

But --! The Jabra Drive that I bought on 12/22 for $29.99 plus tax, total $33.98, Amazon Prime free shipping, is now listed at $64.99 before tax (and still Amazon Prime eligible). Should have bought two before Christmas, I guess. Instead, I'll wait until I see that Jabra or a similar model for a more reasonable price.

After trashing my Moto Roadster 2, I discovered that simply plugging my phone into my truck's aux input for audio worked just as well as the Roadster ever did. The built-in mic on the phone picks up my side of the conversation just fine, and the other end comes through the vehicle's speakers much more clearly than anything from the Roadster.

My HTC One M8 has a "Car Mode" feature; I have the Google Now app as one of the buttons on the main screen. I can tap that, say "Ok Google, call Dody DeBoulet at work," and I'm talking with the missus shortly thereafter.

If you have a dash mount for your phone, you may just want to give that a try (assuming you have an aux input in your car, of course).
