Amazon Fire Stick TV dongle

For amazon prime members, $20 discount for a very short time, brings it down to only $19.00

I grabbed one on hopes it will run SPMC (XBMC fork for Android, already in the Fire TV section of the Amazon APP Store). I HOPE it supports HDMI-CEC, allowing control using the TV's remote... otherwise I probably wouldn't buy more than the one because I rely on Harmony remotes in almost every room of the house.

The best part is in the bottom:

Coming soon—take Fire TV Stick with you to use with HDTVs in hotels, college dorms, airports, or anywhere with captive portal Internet access that requires entering a password or a log-in.

Didn't notice that, but it might be how I use it IF it doesn't support MHL/HDMI-CEC.

Yep ... I have apple tv at home but this would be good for the road. Not sure what happens when overseas but at $19, can't go wrong!

:D

I just got a Roku Stick and Roku 3 for my other two TVs lacking a streaming media device. At $19, this seems like a no-brainer to buy. Decisions, decisions.

Edited to add: who am I kidding? Bought one. :D

I grabbed one too for the low price, I'll see how it compares to my roku

I bought one on spec as well. There are AirPlay receivers for the FireTV box so it may be possible to present to one of these puppies not he road and use it as an "Apple TV stick."

I'm curious whether you can program a VPN in it, but using foreign hotel internets may be a problem. I have a jailbroken iPhone 4s that I now carry as a travel router on some trips and I can put a VPN into it.

I think it's pretty funny that Amazon has already registered your Fire TV Stick under your Appstore devices.

Slightly OT question, but how do people use these in hotels? I generally dont have a lot of time for TV, but sometimes it would be nice. It looks like in the future i may be able to log directly into the hotel wifi, but for locations where that doesnt work am i left using my hotspot?

Yes - but it appears that it will support captive portal at some point using your phone as a keyboard to log in. It is afterall just an Android device.
