You'll be surprised at how much you use the phone once you get it. My aunt resisted until late last year (still used a flip phone, no smart products at all, etc - you are more advanced with your ipod touch). Now, she uses it all the time and for things she never dreamed.

Mary- I just upgraded from a dumb-phone to a smart phone with Verizon and got an iPhone 5S. They had a promotion running over Mother's Day and the iPhone 5S was $100 (with a 2-year contract blah blah blah). If you go to the store, ask them if they can extend the promotion for you...

I just looked at the Verizon web site and the 16GB phone is $199 with contract. I have a 5 that has 8GB and currently it is only 50% full. How much memory the phone has never entered my mind until I decided to look today. I have a IPod so that is where my music stays

I have a 32gb iPod Touch, and it's only got 8gb left, which is why I wanted another 32gb. I really don't want to carry 2 devices.

Go for as large of one as you can. I settled for a 16gb when I bought my 5 thinking it would be enough, I don't put that much on my 3G (what I had previously), etc - and now I am constantly having to delete stuff as I'm running into storage isses because of how much more I am using the phone every day.

Don't get an iPhone. Apple's robbing you of money. Assuming you have Verizon, this is my recommendation for you.

Small phone: Motorola Droid Mini. 4.3 inch screen size, $29.99 with a 2 year contract, 16GB. No bloatware and all of the cool features on the Moto X. Qi Wireless Charging. Android 4.4 KitKat.

Medium phone: Motorola Moto X. 4.7 inch screen size, 1 cent with a 2 year contract, 16GB or $50.01 with a 2 year contract, 32GB. Curved back. Android 4.4.2 KitKat. (My phone!!!)

Large phone: Motorola Droid MAXX. 5.0 inch screen size, $99.99 with a 2 year contract, 32GB. Same features as the Moto X. Wireless Charging. Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Phablet: Samsung Galaxy Note III. 5.7 inch screen size, $199.99 with a 2 year contract, 32GB. It's Samsung, so there's tons of bloatware, but Samsung provides a tool to remove it if you want. Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

+1... Honestly, I think you'll start leaving the iPod behind. The iPhone does everything your iPod can do - music, apps, email - plus it makes phone calls and gets you internet connectivity wherever you go. There will be no reason for a duplicate device. My iPod Touch lives in my car now, permanently plugged in to my stereo. I bring it in the house and update it once or twice a year.

If you're already using 24 gigabytes, the 32GB is a no-brainer... if 64GB is a cheap upgrade, you might want to consider that, especially if you carry a lot of music with you or take a lot of pictures/videos.

Could you survive with a 4s or 5c to same some $$$? Yeah. But one is older and one is more cheaply made. The closer we get to the iPhone 6, the less of a good idea the 4s becomes. If I had to choose between one of the two, I'd take the 5c. The 4s doesn't even support LTE.

I would double-check the specifications on the 4s... most of the new 4s models being sold today are only 8GB with no options for larger capacities... part of their differentiation strategy I'm sure. You may need to go refurb if you want a 32GB 4s, and your carrier might not even offer it.

I'm going to disagree. If this is OP's first foray into smartphones, no need to shake things up too drastically. If the iPhone will have a familiar interface because of OP's experience with the iPod touch, there's something to be said for that... and many people still find reasons to pay for iPhones (myself included, having converted from Android) because they do what they need to do with minimal fuss.

I understand, that works best for you. For me it does not work since I have a 160GB IPod which is full, they did not make a phone big enough.

Good luck getting what you need. I am waiting for the 6 to arrive I would like the 5s with the finger print reader, but I would have to paid for that version. In October if the 6 has been out for 30 days or so I can get it for free (from company). We just need to wait for our techs to install all of the encryption software.

Despite what people keep saying, the 5c is a real good phone. The 5s is better, but there's nothing wrong with a 5c.

As an Apple fanboy, I would consider the Moto X if one wanted to try an Android. There are obvious plus and minus, don't want to get into argument here and confuse OP. I have the Moto G as my backup personal phone and it's a nice option. The learning curve isn't as steep as I thought it would be.... IMHO

Good job of not answering the OP's question of which iPhone to get. She asked a straightforward question which should not devolve into another needless "my smartphone is better than yours" p!ssing contest.

To the OP: if you can't wait get the 5s. Otherwise, wait for the 6 to be released.

Update..

We went to the Verizon store and asked about the Mother's Day sale mentioned above, and they said we should wait until Father's Day since there most likely will be another sale that week. The Mother's Day sale was so popular they extended it until last Monday, and we had missed it by days :( It was for $100 of any smartphone.

We settled in on the 5s, keeping our plan and just adding data & texts, and getting 2-32gb. But now that I'm thinking about it, since most of my friends have iphones, I wonder if I'm really going to use $20 worth of texts each month. I'm assuming that it doesn't matter if they're on Verizon or some other system - imessages are data. at .20 per text, we would have to use 100 texts to spend that $20. So I'm thinking of just not getting it, and see how much we use. If we're close, we can add them on later.
